just revisited this software in its current version 5.2

Have to say this software has really matured and I was most impressed
with it whilst flying with it yesterday.

I particularly liked the custom terrain and waypoint downloading when
setting it up.

Check out http://xcsoar.org

It is a very nice solution at a very reasonable price.

I use the 5.1.8 version.

There is a bug in 5.2, that the previous version, 5.1.8 does not have ,
(the task declaration bug), some have experienced with 5.2.

It should be fixed in the next release.

The team has also done much work with versions for PNA's as well.

Check it out.

Check out the Altair glide Computer on my website.
This is the ONLY hardware designed to optimize the XCSoar experience.

geee, and it only costs as much as a ClearNav... except without the
IGC certified built in- wait it doesn't even it's own GPS engine for
that matter (although for the price of another ClearNav a talking one
can be purchased to go with it.. but would still leave you needing the
logger... ;)

Not wanting to sound derisive, but this hardware completely defeats
the purpose of X/C Soar IMNSHO, although I'm sure it works as
advertised.

I have been using XCSoar for a couple years now. It does everything I
need it to do. However, a couple days ago I downloaded 5.2.2 for
pretty much every platform. I unzipped the appropriate folder for the
PPC2003, but couldn't find a 'setup' or 'install' file. Fortunately
the .cab file was there, so I got it loaded. Did I just somehow
misplace the 'install' or 'setup'?
PS. Both my iPAQs have died. I purchased my 2495 brand new, used it
little, and it is Tangu Uniform. I bought a used HX 4705 from a guy
here on RAS, and it gave me two solid years of great service, before
succumbing to my endless abuse. I just checked eBay, and 3850's are
going for around $40.00 including shipping. Woot!

I've only used 5.2.2 and 5.2.3 in a PNA, but no, there's no installer. I
just unzip onto an SD card. Then I put the polar, TP, airspace and map
files into the XCSoarData directory, rename the executables folder and
XCSoar-PNA.exe to suit the version of Windows Mobile in my PNA, stuff the
card into the PNA and boot it.

I am using XCSOAR on an IPAQ 3970 with bluetooth and am utilizing a
GPS Bluetooth mouse. Seamless, easily set up, transportable ... and
inexpensive (IPAQ was 85.00 USD and GPS was 45.00 ... software of
course FREE !!!

It works flawslessly thus far. Love it!

And yes, you have to use the .cab for the new release as far as I
see. No executable was available, therefore I use the ealier
version. I really can't see buying the expensive software.

I am using 5.2.3Fb8, on a iPAQ 3850, XCSoar is loaded on a 2mb flash
card and all works great. For a GPS engine I have a Garmin map 60CS,
the 2 units get power and talk to each other via a Goddard PS-5.

I don't use the task part of the software, but for general XC flying
for me it works great.

Brad

PS...............I recently bought an iPAQ 310 and have gotten that to
work as well, only flew with it 1 time as a test and it seemed to work
fine.

Brad is that the IPAQ with the built in GPS that you tried it on. I am
going to have to rent gliders until I get a good solid cash flow going
again, and would like to be able to carry a navagation assistant with me
from plane to plane. Seems like this may be the way to go.

Hi Karl,

Yes, the iPAQ 310 is a car navigation unit, built in GPS. I use it for
car navigation, and when I put in the SD card and reboot into windows,
I can use the soaring software.

Used/refurbished iPAQ 310 units can be gotten on eBAY for under $150.

HP310 works great once you have worked out the wrinkles:

1) don't let it run flat
2) sort out a way to charge / power it in flight
3) tape over the battery cover switch
4) put tape beside the on switch to prevent it being turned on accidently
in storage.
5) get your airspace and turnpoints sorted

Screen is good, XCsoar522 is good. I carry two for use in club duo fixed
to canopy with standard suction mount. Secondary power with 3500mah L-ion
battery connected with custom usb cable.

Jim

ps: use seeyou for comps in my own glider though.

I've been using it for 2 years now and like it a lot.

However, with my latest install (5.2.2?) in a newer pocket PC, I
cannot get the wind alorithm to work (ie, perform the calculation and
show me the vector based on circling drift, it always read "0").

Ideas on that??

For you guys looking for a cable solution for the PNA's..........Make
one out of a simle car cell phone charger. It steps 12V down to 5V
for most cell phones. For club ships we have a small gel cell comitted
to the PNA that get's moved between gliders.

XCSoar Rocks! I've had it on Ipaq's, a MIO Moov (that got stolen), and
now a teletype 7060 with a 7" screen. I am convinced however that the
HP310 is the way to go, and it's great help to have the PNA on a
ground retrieve too.

We're all looking forward to the OLC problem getting worked out!!

Ipaq 31x chargers output 3.3vdc on pins 2 and 3 in addition to 5v and
neg on pins 1 and 5. Failure to feed it that will allow it to continue
draining internal power while in use. USB pins are limited to 500mA
and the 310 eats 700-800mA on full brightness so a standard single pin
5v arrangement is not adequate. The extra voltage kicks it into 'fast
charge mode' and allows it to drink external power while preserving
it's internal battery...

Having a loose gelcell sounds like a potential missile or control
jamming hazard (assuming the club ships do not have a proper battery
box to mount it in...). There are slick/small/cheap and readily
available 5-5.5vdc lithium-ion backup batteries around that even come
with their own chargers and work quite well (get one that can
discharge at 700mA or better for a 31x...) for this purpose. Commonly
the 3500mAh model is used for this, which is smaller than a deck of
cards but provides some 5 hours of power for a 31x on full brightness.
I have a 7200mAh (almost exactly the size of a card deck) unit for
using it outside my own ship which is equipped with a 12Ah 12v SLA
batt to a 5v converter.

All the 31x external battery solutions still require a cord with pins
2 and 3 jumped to the 5v pin, either bridged with the appropriate
resistors (my preference) or resistor network, or even just straight
bridged so they all have 5v (others have told me this is OK for power,
but not communicating data). The stock car charger/cig lighter cord
for the 31x already has this built in of course, should one want to
use 12v batteries and keep life simple (which goes completely against
being a glider pilot ;), although not as elegant or safe of a solution
for portability as the 5v options using a modded cord...

Hi,

I sell a very popular cable for connecting a Socket Mobile Power Pack to an
iPAQ 310. You can see details here:
http://www.cumulus-soaring.com/goddard.htm#Cable-USBA-mini-USB-Pwr-1

I also sell one for use with the Goddard PS-5a 12V to 5V power converter.
It has also been quite popular.

To charge my 310, I carefully sawed the end off the car charger, then
soldered on two wires, strain reliefed them with a zip tie and hooked them
to the 12V ships power. The 310 "on" button glows orange for a few
minutes while charging off ships power, then turns green when the internal
battery is charged and the unit starts running off ships power. I was
taking it out of the ship and hooking it to the AC charger after flying,
but found that things worked better if I just left it in the ship. I run
the 310, a radio and a transponder off (2) 7AH lead acid batteries tied in
parallel and generally fly for 5 - 6 hours. So far everything is performing
great. XCSoar is wonderful on the 310.

BTW, we have 2 ClearNav's at my club now. It is the brightest display
that I have ever seen. Standing behind the wing before takoff in bright
sunlight, it was clearly readable. Wow!

Oddly (normal for me) I decided that with all the things I own that
will plug into a cigarette lighter, it made sense to me to mount a
cigarette lighter socket in my glider.

I tried that first, but found that the cigarette lighter socket that I
bought was not secure enough to trust in turbulence. I also didn't want
the USB wire bundled up and hanging off the instrument panel. So now
things are hard wired, bundled and behind the panel with only a few inches
of USB cable hanging out to plug the 310 into.

the latest release of XC Soar is out, as of today. I've loaded it on
to my iPAQ 310 and am giving it a go. Won't be able to fly with it for
a bit, but in the sim mode on the couch it looks pretty cool!

This is brilliant!!

I just bought an Ipaq 310 on ebay for $155 looking forward to loading
it up with this software.

New version looks amazing with the LK8000 look.

I also recently bought an HP 310 on Ebay and just had an opportunity
to try the software during a power-plane flight today. Very nice!

Now I have to learn how to refine the settings for my needs and to
reduce the clutter a bit.

Hey Gang,

Looking at this as a possible solution for our Grob 103 syndicate.
Seems as though the XC Soar website is temporarily inop, so here's a
question. How do log files work when running XC Soar on a 310? I'm
assuming that the logging rate and other parameters are
configurable? What have been your experiences using the 310 as an
unapproved logger?

P3 and gang,

I don't have the HP 310, instead a Nokia 500, but using the 5.2.3F-b4
version, which was the latest at the time, I recorded my Gold distance
flight on 5/17. Looking at that file, it appears to record every 2
seconds. Looking at the current version, a9, I see that the logging
rate is configurable from 1 to 8 seconds, with different settings being
possible for cruise and circling flight. Just for info purposes, this
flight of 3 hours 14 minutes took 230k bytes to store, and contained
6358 records.

It's a great program, and I don't know what else one could want. I'm
curious about the display brightness with the 310, however. Can anybody
provide any data for that?

Thanks,
Ed

Ed,
I once measured the brightness of the HP310/314 with a very good light
meter (I'm a lighting consultant and have very good light, UV, and
electrical meters) but I can't find where I wrote down the results. I
posted them here on RAS I think. Anyway the HP310 is much brighter
than the Ipaq 3970 I compared it to. I still don't think anyone could
fly in full sun and the terrain turned on and see it as well as they
would like, for that you need one of them big screens like an ultimate
or a clearnav. With white screen it works very nice.

Charging cables, an easy way to get one is to buy an APC UPC10 power
pack. Comes with a charger and cord, adds a couple of hours of flight
time and handy for keeping the iPhone charged up as well.

Here is the power draw information on the HP310/314:

glider battery at full charge delivering 12.5 volts to the car
adapter, screen on 100% bright.

If the IPAQ 310 is fully charged: .27A

If the IPAQ battery is dead, and therefore charging: .47A

This is about the same as the HP 4700.

the lesson: only fly with the IPAQ fully charged!

above measured with FLUKE 111 ampmeter.

My power budget:

Becker AR-4201 VHF Radio
Average load during flight 0.09

Transponder and Encoder 0.30

Borgelt B40 0.24

iPAQ 310 - charged 0.27

Total amps 0.89

With a 12AH battery in good shape I should get 8 to 12 hrs. depending
on temperature and battery condition. Most Transponders and encoders
will draw more power, mine are very efficient (I hope).

Hey all,

So, I picked up a used IPAQ 310 on eBay and am trying to get this
stuff sorted out. The unit I received shipped with the battery
almost completely depleted and the guy must have misplaced the special
face-plate for the charger/adapter. So, I'm working off the slower
charge from another mini-USB adapter until I can get the face plate.
This means that I haven't had a chance to really figure out a few of
the basics of loading the software. So far I have:

- Downloaded the version of XCSoar for CE 5.0
( XCSoarPPC2003X.ARMV4.5.2.4)
- Dumped this .CAB file onto an SD card
- Stuck the SD card into the IPAQ

In the few minutes of working time I got to glance at the 310 user
interface before it powered down, I didn't see any way to get directly
to the CE shell. Which begs the question "how do I install on the
310?"

Can anyone give me a preview of what to expect in terms of installing
once I get enough juice into this sucker to be able to work on it for
a while? The XCSoar Wiki just says to go to the CE File Explorer (or
whatever the equivalent is) and click on the .CAB file. Not having
played with CE, not sure what to expect.

TIA

Download this version....
http://www.bware.it/xcsoar/LK8000alfa9.zip

in the Zip package there is a PDF the explains all.
I got mine working but the 310 I got did not ship with a charger so I
am stuck as well with the trickle charge which is no good.

Running the LK8000 version today on an Ipaq 3900 I was impressed with
it for sure.
The 310 I will fly with once I get the Blue Tooth serial and the
charging stuff figured out.

Downloaded the recommended zip file, which included several different
executables but no PDF. The Readme file and history files aren't very
helpful in terms of "installation." After poking around a bit now
that the 310 has enough juice to at least let me navigate around the
system:

- Doesn't seem to be any way to access the CE shell directly.
- I copied the PNA executable onto my SD card in the root directory,
but the IPAQ doesn't seem to give me any way to access files on the SD
card (at least not that I could find after reading the skimpy manual
from HP)

I've got to believe there's a way to run the application from the SD
card (i.e. not requiring me to use ActiveSynch to configure and load),
but maybe I'm wrong.

If anyone has access to the instructions for making XCSoar work with a
310, I'd appreciate it.

Put all the files from the latest PNA version into the root directory
of the SD card.

Insert the card into the PNA card slot

Reboot the PNA using the stylus, poking it into the restart hole just
below the mini-USB port

the 310 will boot into the shell

then select the SDMMC folder (you'll need glasses to see it!)

browse down to the SIM or the Flight .exe file and select it

that works for me.

Well, I'm making progress...

Managed to figure out how to get to the CE shell just prior to seeing
your post.

However, I'm now less clear on which version is the "PNA Version". I
tried the one from the Italian site referred to by Al above, but after
extracting the files to the SD Card and trying to run the PNA
executable, I get an error message that one of the components is
missing. I tried extracting all files to the root and also
maintaining the original folder names (ie. with XCSoardata) but
neither approach worked.

I am running LK8000alfa9

Thanks to all who responded on and offline. Turns out I had
downloaded the wrong base version, so I was missing a bunch of DLLs
and other config files. Once that got sorted out, I was off and
running.

What was the missing component?

Its difficult to diagnose the problem without that information.

You probably need to know that GRecordDll.dll is normally missing from
PNA alpha and beta releases. IIRC its absence is silently ignored: XCSoar
runs without it but won't create IGC log files. You can get it by
downloading the latest stable version (5.2.2), and dropping its copy of
GRecordDll.dll into the 310 alongside the exes. Or contact me off list
and I'll send you a copy.

Well, there were a number of DLLs that ship with the 5.2.2 PNA version
missing. Once I loaded the 5.2.2 version onto the SD Card then the
new LX8000alfa, everything seems to be just fine. I think I had
previously loaded a version designed for the PC by accident...

So far, I've only used it to navigate from the comfort of my easy-
chair. Didn't get lost, so that's a good sign :-)

Seriously, I've been flying with Glide Navigator and Pocket-Nav before
that, which is the minimalist approach to situational awareness and
information presentation. I'll need to fly with XCSoar to form an
opinion. The original goal was to have something we could stick into
a Grob 103 for use in local and regional tasks. It looks like it
will fit the bill, though I do get the sense that task entry isn't a
sweet spot for XCSoar. More shortly...

Well, so far so good. I have the basic configuration items more-or-
less set (geez 20 something different customization screens - we've
done SAP implementations with fewer options :-0 ) Once I got through
that, I was able to load airspace and waypoint files without
problems. Still haven't quite figured out the purpose of Airfields
files (I know, RTFM). The only rub is that I don't seem to be able
to get the Terrain Generator server to create an XCM file for me. Not
sure if it's down or if it's another stupid user issue. I was able
to download a zip file from Sourceforge that contained some terrain
for the eastern part of the US of A, which seems to work, though the
colors and contrast are a little washed out.

Anyway, there's a lot more configuration than what I'm used to with
Glide Navigator, but that's a one-time deal. I'm sure I'll figure
out what settings work best. Thus far, the only complaint is that
the standard landscape mode seems to eat up an awful lot of precious
real-estate on the 310; the data bar on the right side is about 1/3 of
the total screen area. I could do without the vario feature and a
single column of information. Full screen mode seems a little more
efficient in terms of screen usage. We'll see.

I've recently started using XCSoar with an HP Ipaq 310 and really like
the layout of the LK8000 version.

As previously noted: if you are just begining to use the software on a
PNA device, first install the standard 5.2.2 into an SD card and then
copy the 5.2.3F files onto the same SD card. This insures that the
requisite DLL files are installed. This process IS described on the
bware.com site but not on the XCSoar.org site.

The software is evolving so rapidly that it's very tough to keep up
with the enhancements, especially in the PNA version of the software.
You really need to join the user maillist and get the details as they
are released.

As for the data files; There is a terrain generation page that works
very well IF you use an uploaded turnpoint file. Go to the turnpoint
exchenge and get the standard set for your area of interest.
Cambridge format, save it somewhere you can find it easily. Then go
to the terrain generator page and upload the file using that option on
the starting page. It will ask if you want to add an additional
boundary area around the coordinate set, I use 25KM in addition to the
area the program selects. Start the process and STAY on the status
page until the process is complete. You will get a link to a zip file
that contains all the data you need for your area of turnpoints.

I've probably left out something, but that's the way I remember
getting it all set up.

I'm using XCSoar, the version Mike mentions, on a Nokia 500 PNA. I love
it, and with the LK8000 version, there's not so much wasted screen area.
To what Mike said, I'd add that I've done the same thing but using
manually specified lat/long boundaries. The statement about "stay on
the page" is important, though.

I'd like to see effort put into using the Terrain maps that are
included with the iPAQ 310 as maps used by XC soar. The clarity of the
resident maps is much better than the ones generated by the terrain
generator..............plus you get practically the whole western
hemisphere!
