Is there an easy way to keep the back light on when using XCSOAR and the
HP312, mine keeps reverting to back light off.

I have tried setting it on in the Road mode.

Here's what a friend gave me. I have tried this and it works, but if
you let the 310 boot without the SD card in the slot, you will have to
do portions of this over again. I keep a print out of this in my
cockpit, just in case I boot without the card accidentally.

To set the backlight of the iPaq on:

From Windows CE desktop, Start -> Settings -> Control Panel
• Open "Backlight Control" and set High backlight (max)
• You don't need to change timeouts in the two upper boxes,
• because those values are controlled by "Display Properties".
• Exit "Backlight Control".
• Open "Power Properties".
• Powerscheme: AC Power
• set to "Never" all controls.
• Exit "Power Properties".
• Open "Display Properties"
• Select "Backlight" tag
• Select "Automatically turn off backlight while on external power",
and
• set it to 30 minutes, then exit with Ok.
• Open again "Display Properties"
• Select "Backlight" tag
• DESELECT "Automatically turn off backlight while on external
power".
• Exit with Ok.
• Open "Backlight control" again, you will see that "AC power and
device is idle for"
• box is now EMPTY, correctly. Don't do anything . Press Ok.

There is an alpha version of the software with an automatic backlight
control for the HP 31x PND devices. Hopefully it will be fully
released soon and then you won't have to do all these gyrations to
keep the backlight on.
