Yup - I haven't been able to access anything on XCSoar since at least
Saturday...

I was able to go DIRECTLY to the SourceForge site and download a
version of XCSoar last evening. I haven't had any luck with the
XCSoar site for the last week or so.

I was/am looking for an overview of the application; something like a
"manual" or features description. Screenshots would be great.
Alternatively, if there is a PC-based simulator (I can dream), that
would do the trick...

Every download I've seen (since 5.2.2 Final anyway) contains the PC-based
simulator as well as the PNA and assorted PDA versions.
The main XCSoar website contains a fairly full manual, though I'm
uncertain which version it relates to - 5.1.9 or 5.2.2 at a guess.

Here is the overview page with doc links etc.
http://www.xcsoar.org/mediawiki/index.php/Main_Page
I used the terrain generator last evening on the wwwxcsoar.org site
but it failed to complete and then crashed I think.

The downloads for the PC (simulator) and the manual is here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/xcsoar/files/
The manual is slightly outdated, but can be found by scrolling down
and expanding the line labeled "Documentation".
The program for generating terrain/maps for your local area is:
http://xcsoar.dd.com.au/cgi-bin/terrain.pl
For turnpoints/waypoints and Special Use Airspace, check out the
WorldWide Turnpoint exchange:
http://soaringweb.org/TP
(note the lack of "www" - this is important, do not put it in)
The XCSoar Manual will tell you what file formats you are looking for,
when you go to the WorldWide Turnpoint Exchange.
Enjoy!
