Now, this is the current rule, please read it:

10.9.2 >> Finish Cylinder
10.9.2.1 A task shall include a Finish Point not more than 2 miles from the home field and a Finish Radius not greater than 2 miles.

10.9.2.2 ‡ Minimum Finish Height
10.9.2.2.1 ‡ Each task shall include a Minimum Finish Height (MFH), set by the CD at least high enough that pilots who obtain
a valid finish can return to the home airfield for a normal pattern and landing.

The rules committee and the SSA BOD has established this as a RULE. It now requires the CD to set "AT LEAST HIGH ENOUGH" that .......for a ""NORMAL PATTERN"" and landing.

Sean Fiddler F2, or anyone else, after reading the above, is this a RULE as it reads or is it meant to be guidance as John C. says it is? It sure doesn't say guidance anywhere as I read it, but its a requirement!

Man, what a pain in the ass at Mifflin.

Returning on the back side of Jacks with weak ridge and no thermals, you leave the ridge at 1900-2000 because you *cannot* get higher and fly through a ton of sink (netto 4 - 6 kts down is common). The closest point of the ridge to the edge of the finish cylinder is 1.6 SM and the 700' agl finish is 1520. You'd probably prefer to cut the corner if energy allows, but that makes the distance more like 3 miles. Twice I was hanging on my flaps at 42 kts at what I guessed to be the edge of the cylinder (when the gps says 1.0 mile, you've generally finished several seconds earlier). Eyes on the panel, about 1530 feet, right in the GA traffic pattern (amazing how many GA pilots don't read Notams and show up at closed airports!). This is safer than an eyes out finish at lower altitude? I don't think so. I fly a '20.. What's a Libelle pilot supposed to do in that situation? We never found out because none of the low performance guys had to try to make this work.

I don't have a problem with penalizing actual unsafe flying. However, we're now erring on the side of penalizing (severely) *potentially* unsafe flying. Two guys I know of (there may have been others) drew no speed points after hitting the cylinder below 1320 agl. In both cases the airport arrivals were reasonable energy and safe.

I flew the Sports Class Nats with Powerflarm Brick (v 3.0), Butterfly 57mm display (v 3.1).

My experience last season was that flarm was a bit of a nuisance: in large gaggles the darned thing made more noise than my audio vario. As well, I found the "radar" tracking feature a useless distraction. So I thought I would fly a contest with Stealth mode enabled by default as well as Competition mode (higher alarm thresholds, enabled using the cflags command in the configuration file, see the dataport specification for details).

It all worked as intended. Warning threshold is "just right" for competition use and overall distraction level is happily low.

The fraction of pilots at this contest using Flarm was happily high. I heard "Thanks Flarm!" and similar on the radio many times.

Inertial sensing in Butterfly Vario, TE vs Airmass indicators

I put this into a new topic in order not to SPAM other topics where this question came up.

> I thought that a vario needed to use the 3-D inertial sensor to sort out the horizontal and vertical >components of "gusts", and I thought that nobody was doing that just yet. Or does the inertial sensor >just make the filtering better?

Well, actually a vario is an energy difference indicator. Many people (at least here in europe) want to know if total energy changes, even if the energy addition is due to a gust rather than thermal updraft. The vario needle in Butterfly Vario remains the "energy difference indicator" just as you are used to (inertial sensors are used here to e.g. acceleration induced errors etc..)

We have another indicator (blue round indicator) that indicates vertical airmass movement (kind of a that what was called netto vario in the past, but determined differently). The vertical airmass indicator is based on the inertial reference system and therefore will not show horizontal gust-induced energy changes (this can be mixed with conventional netto and tuned by many factors taking installation etc. into account).

This way you get both. Precise energy difference indication and indication of vertical airmass. Both indicators together give you a good situational overview. You know where the energy change comes from. Knowing if its worth slowing down to thermal or if the energy addition you just experienced is due to a gust is a very cool thing, especially when flying heavy gliders.
Questions:

Is it correct to assume the 304SJ and the JS1-CJT are imported as experimental sailplanes?

FAA Admininstrator would be FSBO? What would be criteria for district FSBO to "authorize" pilot?
