Age 60 rule catch 22 by
Jim Macklin
Reply from AOPA..
Based upon the new provision in the rule change a pilot has to be 60 or
younger when the new law went into effect (December 13) in order to take
advantage of the new 65th birthday limit. Sorry.

A few Q's that have been on my mind lately. by
buttman
1) I've always been under the impression that a commercial certificate
is required to get the instructor certificate, but once you have it,
the commercial license is not needed anymore. This explains why you
can still get paid to instruct and sign students off without a valid
medical...

Autopilot info source by
Paul kgyy
It's my understanding that the STEC autopilots get their "bank"
information from the gyro in the turn coordinator while other systems
derive this from the vacuum-driven horizon indicator.
Are there any TSO'd systems other than STEC that do this? I ask the
question because STEC's new owners are...

Why are people ignoring the ADS-B Out NPRM? by
Ron Lee[_2_]
Official link: http://tinyurl.com/2raefd
My analysis: http://tinyurl.com/2wem8j
This NPRM will mandate aircraft avionics that in my opinion offers
little to no benefit to the GA pilot, no safety improvement, may help
the airlines (not proven) and may only help the FAA save money.
And for all...

weather question by

Is there a decent source for a statistic that gives VFR vs. IFR vs. NO
FLY for geographic areas?
Say, for iced in Iowa, or for turbulent but clear Tejas.

Bonanza (A36) Approach Speeds by
[email protected]
Any other Bonanza pilots have thoughts on Approach Speeds?
Eckelbar posits 105 knots. I've tried it and it works, but is a
handful to reconfigure and slow down in time for a more reasonable 75
KIAS final approach speed.
Dick Collins recommends flying approaches fast ("the runways are
usually...

Just got a copy of the new AWS and it is awesome. The fact that it is
published by ASA is not a factor...it's something every serious pilot should
have. Twice as many pages as 45E,...

Merry Christmas from the guy who writes the FARs by

Anyone got any details on this? by
Jay Honeck
This just came in on our local "Corridor Business Journal" email:
"A settlement has been reached in a lawsuit against a flight
instructor accused in a 2004 plane crash near the Dubuque airport. The
lawsuit was filed by two student passengers who claimed the pilot
knowingly flew in icy conditions....

Aviation Hiakus by

A few aviation related haiku-style poems:
Odor of avgas
Sound of planes roaring to life
I love the airport
Pushing the starter
The propeller springs to life
Soon I'll be airborne

Hi All,

the disruptive presence of MX was proving frustrating to say the

self esteem and insecurity issues coupled with his probable mental
medical condition did...

Weather luck by
Jay Honeck
It has not been VFR a single day that my son has been available to fly
since he got his ticket (and took me for my first ride) back on
November 26th. He's getting really, really frustrated -- but all I
can think is that it's a darned good thing he took that check-ride
when he did.
Heck, Mary and...
