Iowa City Fly-In Breakfast This Sunday, 8/26 by
Jay Honeck
This Sunday, August 26th, will be the annual SERTOMA Fly-In Breakfast
here in Iowa City (KIOW).
This event has been held for decades, and annually draws thousands of
people to Iowa City Airport for pancakes, sausage, and aircraft, all
served in the name of a good cause. (SERTOMA stands for...

Flying Tigers: Claire Chennault and all that by
Cubdriver
HarperCollins has just published a revised, updated, and shortened (!)
edition of "Flying Tigers: Claire Chennault and His American
Volunteers, 1941-1942". Thanks in large part to people I met on this
newsgroup, it's a much improved version of what Smithsonian
Institution Press published in 1991...

Mounting 396 by
Paul kgyy
I have received the Garmin GPSMAP 396 that I ordered at OSH and am now
trying to figure out how to mount it securely in the airplane (Piper
Arrow)
1 I want to be able to use it out of the airplane occasionally.
2 Experimenting with it at home, it appears to me that the font size
on both screen...

I passed. by
Crash Lander[_1_]
Well, I passed my check ride!
Suffice is to say, I have flown MUCH better before today, and I really
was not at all happy with my performance, but I passed none the less.
Now, time to start learning.

Note the age of the NEXRAD vs. the age of the XM lightning.

crummy stationary fronts by
Paul kgyy
I don't think any kind of weather is as irritating to me as these
summertime stationary fronts that just drape themselves through the
midwest, generating day after day of fog, rain, drizzle, low clouds,
tstorms. Very little wind, air so stagnant that it too is
irritating. I tried to fly from...

NTSB Accidents & Incidents by
john smith[_2_]
I find it interesting that the only accident/incident reported at
AirVenture 2007 is the P-51.
So much for the NTSB not being influenced by politics.

got a call from BDR FSS by
Kevin Clarke
I'll try to make this long story brief.
On 7/29 I filed via DUATS an IFR departure from KFIT to KBHB via ENE.
This was at 1200Z. My proposed time off was 1500z. My morning went
quicker so when I got to the airport I called BDR FSS on the RCO 118.025
and amended my time off for 1300Z and filed...

History Channel debunks 9/11 conspiracies by
Gattman[_2_]
Hooray for The History Channel, who aired a program last night that
presented one 9/11 conspiracy theory after another and blew them all out of
the sky like clay pigeons. It also demonstrated why Americans view these
theories with such hostility and anger.
Of course it won't change the minds of...

Unscientific survey - why are you a pilot? by
Doug Semler
(Trying to steer a thread to the topic of the group g)
A response of mine in another thread got me to thinking (dangerous, I
know) about what makes a person *want* to become a pilot. This has
probably been asked umpteen times before, and will be asked umpteen
times in the future, but I am...

Antique Airplane Assoc. Fly-In by
[email protected][_2_]
I'm curious if anyone out there has flown (or driven) in to the AAA
fly-in near Blakesburg, IA over labor day weekend. My understanding is
that to fly-in one must be invited, but is the whole show by
invitation only? (for those of us unwashed masses who fly 172's, they
must keep the riff-raff...

Flight above 60,000 ft by
Charles Talleyrand
I just picked up a used U-2. It's quite a hoot to fly, but I'm having
some trouble. Maybe you can help me out.
1) When I go cruising above 60,000 ft I cancel my IFR clearance. Then
I buzz around a bit. But how do I come back down legally? Obviously
I need an IFR clearance to decend back down...
