What the wife notices by
Robert M. Gary
I thought this was pretty funny. My non-aviation wife has about 800
hours in the right seat but has never expressed any interest in
aviation or the airplane (other than being a good method to get to
cool places like the beach or a remote area of Mexico). Last night at
dinner she was able to rattle...

What if... by
john smith[_2_]
I play mental "What if.." games when I fly, trying to imagine the best
way to handle an in-flight emergeny.
One of the aircraft I fly is a 1982 Piper Turbo Arrow IV.
Nowhere in the POH does it mention the emergency procedure for a
turbocharger failure resulting in an oil fed fire in the engine...

Airshow at Langley AFB by
gyoung
Anyone within striking distance of Langley AFB, come see the airshow
today or tomorrow (Apr 28, 29). The demonstration performed by the F-22
is absolutely amazing. More on this later. And there are many other
great flybys, static displays, etc. Today's schedule is at...

City controlled airspace? by
Dallas
I stumbled upon the Aircraft and Airports section of the Dallas City Codes
and found a whole new layer of regulations I never knew about.
Here's a good one. As a student, I guess I need to call my instructor
every time I need to start the engine:
SEC. 5-24. ONLY PILOT OR COMPETENT MECHANIC...

President of our local EAA chapter killed in inaugural flight by
Peter R.
Yesterday (Saturday) the president of our local EAA chapter here in Central
NY (USA) and a passenger were killed during the first takeoff of their
just-completed Lancair Legacy aircraft. Sadly they had invited family and
friends to witness this first flight.
According to the news article, the...

Variations in soft field landings by
Maxwell
I was taught to lift the flaps immediately upon touch down on soft field
landings. My instructors stated getting more weight on the brakes as soon as
possible, would facilitate a quicker stop than leaving the flaps down for
drag, and loosing some braking power to the extra lift.
However, during...

AOPA Mag This Month by
Jay Honeck
It's interesting to see AOPA doing a piece on "Flying in Europe", so
soon after our long thread on the same topic. Many of their
conclusions were the same as ours.
Also, strangely enough, there's another article this month on "Flying
GA to Memphis", in order to visit Beale Street and all the...

dumb question about Radio comms / opening flight plans by
[email protected]
I'm embarrassed to say that I have forgotten something. When I want to
open my flight plan, and I look at the frequencies printed above the
VOR, it says 122.1R 122.4. Does the 'R' refer to what I need to do or
what the Radio operator does? That is, do I send on 122.4 and receive
on 122.1, or the...

I took my first light in an LSA (somewhat long) by
[email protected]
Last Friday at Sun-n-Fun I wandered around a number of LSA's. I've
been reading about them for a couple of years and was curious. The
idea of C-172 performance (for your typical $100 hamburger run) and
1/2 the fuel cost or less is really appealing.
Several that I sat in were just too small. I'm...

Low flight and wildlife by
Mxsmanic
I see on a sectional chart a box that says "The Islands, Rocks, and Reefs
along the Pacific Coast-Line from 42°00'N to 46°00'N are National Wildlife
Refuges. Low flights may disturb wildlife resulting in a violation of Federal
law."
Unfortunately, the chart doesn't say what constitutes "low...

Photo of Lt. Kevin Davis and Harrison Ford by

Here is a photo I took of Lt. Kevin Davis at Oshkosh last year after
he had given a ride to Harrison Ford (in back seat). Kevin perished
in his F-18 in the recent Blue Angels accident. He looked like a very
nice guy when I saw him last year, what a sad...
