BRAC Logic....NAS Brunswick by
Andrew C. Toppan
I'm trying to figure out the BRAC logic in the realignment of NAS
Brunswick, Maine. The plan is to relocate all the planes to NAS
Jacksonville but keep Brunswick open as a Naval Air Facility.
I can understand the rationale for moving to Jacksonville -
consolidating the P-3/P-8 fleets to a single...

1940s-1950s military airplanes glass slides by
pkstore2
I recently ran across a nice batch at an auction of glass slides of fighter
& bomber & recon aircraft from about 1947 to 1954. There could be nice 8x10s
made from these. Please email me at for more
information and a sample slide. Thanks

F-8 versus F-100 by
Doug \Woody\ and Erin Beal
In the interest of getting back to a discussion on Naval Aviation in this
news group... (I'm tired of the War in Iraq and German Proximity Fuze
threads.)
I recently had the good fortune to talk to several former Navy reservists at
a recent Hunter Reunion for pilots. We had 35 years of VF-201 and...

The Air Plan by
[email protected]
Once upon a time I came across an Air Plan from a USN aircraft carrier,
and there are some things I cannot understand:
Of course, mission abbreviations like DCA, SEAD, AEW, ULT or CSAR, are
quite common for people who are interested in military aviation for
some time, but could somebody, please,...

Naval Aviation News by
Jim
Has Grampaw Pettibone put in his retirement papers? Or is the staff at
Naval Aviation News all on leave. The "current" edition is shown as
November December 2004.
Seriously, this is one publication I truly enjoyed over the years. Do
our present leaders consider the wisdom shared to be of less...

F-8J APQ-124 MAGDARR question by
Guy Alcala
Any of you F-8 guys have experience with the J's radar? I
have a source which states (and has a photo of what is
stated to be the APQ-124 control head indicating the same)
that the APQ-124 had a Pulse-doppler mode as well as Pulse,
similar to the APG-59 of the F-4J. Was this mode...

Folded wing tip question by
a425couple
I have a old question, maybe someone can refute, or verify?
I tend to mistrust 'sea-stories' w.o. cites. Sometimes I think
they likely true, probably partly true, or unlikely.
But some good ones stick in my mind, from all categories.
Making the rounds circa 1972 was that a F4 with folding...

Aw Rating merger and Today's ASW by
Charlie Wolf
Well - in keeping with the recently posted NG charter for this joint,
I offer this up:
Do group members here think this is a good idea?? My days as an AW
(S-3A's & B's) concentrated on sub-hunting and aviation acoustic
analysis, ISAR RADR, MAD, et al. But merging the rating with mechs
and metal...

After many weeks of hard working, but sooner then I expected myself, the
completely renewed website of the P-3 Orion Research Group is now up and
running! I have done a bit of testing and it seems to work well. Some
section can use a few more pics, but those can be added later.
What is...

The German proximity fuse. by
Eunometic
The German proximity fuse.
The development of the US proximity fuse by the US in WW Two is
regarded as a unique allied triumph.
Little known however is that the Germans independently developed and
successfully test fired almost 1000 rounds of a similar proximity fuse
near the wars end that if...

1957: Naval Type Specification 146 by
Marco P.J. Borst
Hello,
Back in 1957 USN's Naval Type Specification 146 was issued to find a
replacement aircraft for the P2V Neptune and P5M Marlin. As you might know
Lockheed's Model 185 (later called P3V-1 Orion and again later P-3A Orion)
was the USN's choice.
Nothing much is known about the other aircraft...
