Progressive lenses OK for pilots? by
skyfish
I want to get current on my VFR Single Engine Land license but my eyes
are not what they used to be. The strength I need for good far vision
makes it so I can't read charts in the cockpit without taking them off.
I figured I would try a progressive lens because I thought it would
eliminate the...

Interesting show on Discovery today by
GDBholdings
I was watching an episode of Mayday on discovery today about an Aeroflot
Airbus A310 that crashed in 1994,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeroflot_Flight_593
Anyway without getting into a long post I posted a link to the disaster and
subsequent investigation into the reasons for the crash.
Now I...

First Solo and Total Hours Flown by
Greengears
Every pilot out there will never forget their first Solo. But there has
always been this nagging questions as to should there be a minimum
amount of hours flown before a pilot can be allowed to Solo. I have
seen pilots solo in as little as 9 hours and as high as 75 hours.
I know most of you will...

Sport Pilot CFI and FAR's by
[email protected]
Hey guys,
Since I am a CFIG, 61.429 would allow me to teach at the sport pilot
glider level without getting the 5 hours of make and model time in,
correct?
Now, 61.419 tells me that I can obtain addtional priviliges to provide
training in other light-sport aircraft such as LSA single engine...

Another Cirrus Down 11/30 by
Mortimer Schnerd, RN
A Cirrus crashed on approach to Charlotte Douglas Airport this evening at about
1945. I can tell you fairly confidently this one will most likely be weather
related. It absolutely sucks outside this evening.

Question on Baron 58 prop control by
Mxsmanic
On the real Baron 58, is there any forward thrust at all with the
props feathered (or set to zero)? I have a slider set to the prop
controls and if I set it to zero the plane will still drift forward
slowly as I advance the throttles.
I'm not clear on exactly what 0% does on the prop control. I...

Air taxi vs. Charter or Part 135 by
Dan
All,
What's the difference between "Air Taxi" and Charter or Part 135
operations? While tracking some flights via FlightAware, I notice that
some planes fly under their tail numbers most of the time, but at times
there is a "T" prefixed to the tail number in the system. I read that
this...

Garmin 295 by
Newps
Last summer I updated my Garmin 295. Now everytime I turn it on the
first thing that happens is the unit beeps twice and a message pops up
saying..."Aviation waypoint was deleted..Enter" I have to hit the enter
button to get past it. I have no waypoints in memory now, there may
have been...

OT - Garmin database updates PROBLEM SOLVED by
Michael Ware
Couldn't get update to run on my Windows 98 machine (166mHz) it was time for
a new one, got a 3 gHz with Windows XP works fine. Got the obstacle database
updated.
Garmin tech support did a fine job, tried lots of things. Now since
Micros@ft isn't supporting 98 anymore, it was REALLY time for a...

Icing conditions by
Mxsmanic
From what I understand, icing protection should be turned on if the
outside temperature is 5° C or less. However, what is the reason for
not having it on all the time? Does it overheat in normal weather, or
what?
I read that turning on icing protection before "sufficient ice has
accumulated" may...

Log book entries by
N2310D
Granted that we can pretty much enter anything into our log books as long as
we are willing to sign the true and accurate caveat at the bottom of the
page.
Here's a hypothetical scenario. CJ gets an invitation to go for a ride in
ER's rotary wing machine for a 30 minute hop around the town. CJ...

must have 350hp above FL250? by
buttman
According to the Aerostar's specification sheet, it says "Must have
350hp engines above FL250". Is this a regulation thing, or just a
limitation of the type? I tried searching through any kind of e-FAR I
could find, but came up with squat.

Part 135 question by
Dallas
I realize this is a GA group but I thought some of the guys with a
commercial ticket might be able to answer this question.
I have a friend with a PP-SEL that was coming back on a commuter flight
from the Bahamas in a Cessna 402. He managed to get the right seat and
after chatting with the pilot,...

Light twins not using contra-rotating propellers by
RomeoMike
Mark Levin wrote:
Hello,
As was pointed out to me the Beechcraft Baron does not use contra-rotating
propellers. A bit of research showed me that most U.S. built light twins do
not use them either.
One twin that I have experience with, the Seminole, does have counter
rotating props.

Light twins not using contra-rotating propellers by
Jim Macklin
The cost of manufacturing two versions of the engine and
recertification of the design is not worth the small
advantage. Most light twins were designed and certified
over 40 years ago.

A reluctance to take the controls by
Jay Honeck
Mary and I have given rides to dozens of people over the years. I
usually like to let a newbie ride in the right seat with me, and will
usually let them "take the wheel" once we're safely at altitude. Most
people love their new-found freedom, while others are tentative and not
quite sure what to...

I was reading some FARs. Specifically, 91.409 section (b).
"(b) Except as provided in paragraph (c) of this section, no person may
operate an aircraft carrying any person (other than a crewmember) for hire,
and no person may give flight instruction for hire in an aircraft which that
