Wing De-Icing Question by
Robert11[_2_]
Hello,
I guess de-icing is going to be a popular subject.
Question, please: On commercial jet airliners like, e.g., a 767 or 757, is
there any in-flight deicing system for the wing and tail surfaces, other
than a leading edge pneumatic boot ?
What about the "main," large upper surfaces ?

Clearance on hold, hold for release by
Hap[_2_]
Up until the other day, when I heard "Hold for Release" it was after I
had copied, read back and accepted my IFR clearance, squalk code, and
had received ground control clearance to taxi to the departure runway.
It rarely involved waiting more than 10 minutes before being cleared
to taxi, or...

Buffalo Q400 crash by
Don[_5_]
Just reading the WSJ reports on today's NTSB hearing concerning the
Q400 accident in Buffalo. I am not a pilot -- I know just enough about
flying to be dangerous. But I have a question for you folks who do
have real knowledge of aviation.
The transcript of the cockpit voice recorder says that once...

I got two, at about the same time.
Two fairly graphic pics. The entire arse of the plane is gone, you can
see the sea! Pax with masks on. 2nd pic, someone flyin' out the back.
Text of the email goes like this...

The world saw the disappearance of an A330 Air France during its...

Flight simulator by
haribole
Hello
Would appreciate any recommendations for a realistic PC based flight
simulator that can be used to learn the principles of flying.
Any experience on using a PC based flight simulator to enhance the
learning experience would be welcome.
Thanks

How can the Magnus effect be explained with Bernoulli? by
Mikki
Hi folks,
According to Bernoulli’s principle, an increase of speed will be
accompanied by a decrease in static pressure. However, Bernoulli’s law
only pertains to flows without any external energy being added (or
removed).
That’s why I do not understand why Bernoulli can be used to explain
the...

Question about the Airbus planes by
[email protected]
I have posted here before because I like to get answers from experts
about aviation. I have been interested in the media reporting on the
Air France Flight 447 crash. More to the point, I'm curious if you
all think they are missing a bigger story.
The Airbus planes employ something called...

Closed Airspace by
Mike Granby
Yesterday I was flying from York PA to Myrtle Beach IFR, direct to
destination at the time, and the controller called me and said that I
had to make a decision. The airspace ahead was "closed" so I could
either be routed around it IFR, or I could cancel and climb 500 ft,
and continue VFR for a...

ATC Radar Question by
Jackie
I understand that ATC radar uses an encoding altimeter and a transponder
operating with Mode C to determine an aircraft's altitude. Let's forget
about Mode C for a moment and switch to Mode A only or just a primary
return.
If an aircraft is at 18,000 ft (approx 3 nm) and 3 nm away from the...

WINGS program... by
Sylvain
Just a little heads up: if like me, you rely on the WINGS program to
satisfy the proficiency requirements of 14 CFR 61.56, then you might be in
trouble and you most definitely want to look into it before your next
flight:
The old program has, I am told, been 'sunset' on December 2007. In...
