Learning piston engine basics by
[email protected]
Is there a good place on the web that describes the basics and
terminology of piston engines? I understand the basic concepts, but
some of the terms I read, like journals and bosses, etc., are a bit
beyond me and I'd like to get a little bit better knowledge of the
concepts. I'm definitely not...

Showing metal at 1,100 hours by
Maule Driver
I've put over 1,000 of the 1,100 hours on this new O-360-C4f. Changed
the oil religiously. I didn't baby the engine but didn't abuse it
either. Always hangered etc.
My last oil analysis showed a doubling of iron 47.9ppm to 101.0ppm with
36 hours on the oil. Everything else normal. We did the...

DG IRAN Update by
Jim Burns
Just an update on the repairs to our autopilot DG.
It was overhauled about 18 months ago so the 12 month warranty had expired.
Instead of doing a full overhaul, we opted to do a IRAN, or Inspect, Repair
As Necessary. An exchange unit was available from the Gyro House for $625,
$1200 core charge...

Life isn't fair by
xyzzy
Spectacular severe clear weather, most of my co-workers have already
cleared out for the holidays, and I'm at work looking out the window at
the blue skies and limp flag in front of my building. Humbug.

FAA to enforce aircraft registration regulations by
Paul kgyy
This has been on the news lately, but I've been wondering why, since
the FAA has been crying about budget constraints. But it just occurred
to me that the real reason they want the address file correct is to
collect user charges.

Cold weather starting. by
Mike Noel
Thought I would share this experience with the group since I have worried
about cold weather starting each winter since I bought my plane.
Living in Tucson, it doesn't get cold very often, but on those mornings when
the ambient air temperature reaches freezing or below I have wondered if I
was...

Heating the hanger by
Gig 601XL Builder
What is the groups suggestion for heating a 40x50 insulated hanger. It
doesn't have to be hot I just want to raise the temp about 15-20 degrees
when it is 30-40 outside.
Here's the rub. No natural gas available plenty of electric though including
an unused 220 connection.
To see the hanger visit...

AOPA flight planner chuckle by
[email protected]
My flying club is undergoing a fleet restructure, replacing Warriors
with Skyhawks. I was editing my profile on AOPA flight planner,
deleting the old aircraft. When I highlight a plane and "delete" in
the aircraft list, the dialog that pops up asks:
The aircraft "Piper - PA28-161 - N81917" will...

Free Avionics by
RST Engineering
Don't get all excited.
We have two units that came in for fixing a year ago. Repeated attempts to
communicate with the sender/owner have been futile.
One each RST-502 Audio Selector Panel with Intercom supposedly inop on nav
and dme inputs. Intercom is hot-mic style.
One each RST-521 Remote...

Keeping the Hangar Clear of Snow by
Jay Honeck
We're facing the snowiest fall ever in Iowa, which has required shoveling
pretty much every other day. (Gosh, I can hardly wait for winter!)
Our airport plows the ramps and runways well, but they always leave a strip
of snow approximately 2 - 3 feet out from the hangar door. This, of...

GTX 327 serial input? by
weebee
Help - anybody out there experienced using the serial (not gray code)
encoder inputs on a Garmin GTX 327? My manual (revision J) shows the
first "RS-232 in" connection on Pin 19, in most places in the manual.
But on on the encoder hook up chart (chart 2.6.2.1, page 15) it shows
Pin 19 to be the...

Garmin remote antennas by
Dave
Hi All!
There are some interesting threads in some other pilot groups about
these antennas...
Apparently, (I do not have one) garmin has a MAGNET in the base of the
antenna (for holding it in place in a vehicle) that they ship with the
396.. (!)
Slight issue with mounting it with velcro on top...

Trial by newspaper by
Paul kgyy
I feel sorry for the SW pilots who went through the fence at Midway
last week. Now every edition of the local newspapers runs articles by
lawyers and journalists second-guessing every decision made on a
difficult approach - quartering tail wind, marginal visibility, fair
braking, short...

GPS 396 audio terrain warnings by
Dave Butler
Does anyone else have their Garmin 396 connected to the audio in their airplane?
If so, do you get terrain warnings every time you approach an airport to land?
I do, but Garmin doesn't seem to be very interested in helping. I've exchanged
several emails with their tech support. They don't...
