AN ENGINE FOR HOMEBUILDERS by
Bob
As of 2009 Amateur aircraft builders are largely limited to various
Volkswagen conversions. While such conversions may be as large as
140cid (2332cc) when using a Type I crankcase -- and up to 170cid
(2884cc) if you begin with the heavier Type IV -- the SUSTAINABLE
output of these engines is...

RANS S-9 Chaos loses a wing by
Jim Logajan
Video of wing failure via AVweb:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4a8cntPdRtk
RANS S-9 loses a wing in an airshow doing aerobatics; pilot survives
because plane is equipped with BRS and promptly deployed.
Natural to wonder whether some earlier stunt actually partially cracked the
spar.

The NTSB has released the factual report:
http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief2.asp?ev_id=20081017X50355&ntsbno=WPR09LA016&akey=1
This is the usual precursor to the final report, which usually contains
the same information with the addition of the NTSB's Probable Cause.

Auto Fuel STC by

I have a friend who just bought an old Cessna 175. He wants to get an auto
fuel STC. He told me that someone overheard someone tell someone else about
a friend who.......he thinks there is somewhere on the internet where he can
get this STC for free. He does not have access to the internet and...

'58 Complementary Triumph TR3 Motorcar by
Jim Weir
My lady has just informed me that she would consider a complementary Triumph TR3
to our classic '58 Cessna 182 a good idea. She's willing to cash in her old
Chevy on the Triumph...oil leaks and all...for a TR-3 of that era.
Anybody got a lead on one of those old rascals?

Physics question by
Rich S.
There is a (magic) B-17 flying along at 560 mph. The tail gunner is out of
..50 caliber ammo. He sees a Messerschmitt ME-109 crossing behind the B-17,
50 yards away.
He pulls out his trusty .45 Colt auto (muzzle velocity 820 fps) and fires at
the Hun when the ME-109 is directly behind the B-17. He...

Light Sport Aircraft survey by
gilan
Do you own or are you planning to buy or build an aircraft that fits into
the Light Sport Aircraft rules? The airplane can be an older "factory"
certified airplane such as the Cub or Ercoupe, a new "factory" S-LSA or an
experimental that does or will comply with the LSA...

4130 can't be OA welded? by
wright1902glider
While browsing a bit more of that "good 'ole internet wizdom", I ran
accross this page:
http://www.ihpva.org/com/PracticalInnovations/materials.html
Its a human-powered vehicle website, but on this page, the author
seems to think that 4130 cro-mo steel can't be welded with an oxy-
acetylene...

Senate Bill S.786 could kill NWS internet weather products by
FlyBoy
As a private pilot, I make frequent use of the NWS's Aviation Digital
Data Service (see 1). I especially like their "Java Tools" graphic
presentations of METAR, TAF, and AIR/SIGMET data. Senate Bill S. 786
(see 2) could well kill such NWS weather presentations in favor of
private sector...

Which Ultralight to build..... by
WC
OK, was planning on building a Texas Parasol (as you've probably seen from
my previous posts) but it's looking like it may not be a very good design
for a legal 103. That being the case, what design to build. I spent a good
part of my life as a mechanic, can weld steel and aluminum (stick, mig,...

Here's a news scoop for you all...

Downloading Flying Music? by
Jay Honeck
We've got the PS Engineering CD/Intercom in our plane, and listen to CDs on
long trips.
I am obviously slipping into "dinosaur" status, as I have never downloaded
music, for "burning" onto a blank CD. I *have* burned CDs, but I've always
done it from tracks played off of another CD.
Does anyone...

compound curves in plywood by
BA-100
I'm considering building a replica of a 30's glider that was originally
built in two halves, like a plastic model, but with pressed plywood halves.
Duplicating this has been outside the reach of a homebuilder without some
sort of press, and any made since have either been made out of fiberglass
or...

Your fancy schmancy dream machine by

There have been many posts in recent months by people contemplating
their own complicated and even radical designs. Reading between the
lines, it appears that many of those people have yet to build their
first plane. May I kindly suggest that one's first plane should be a
time-proved kit or...
