Qs re ADS-B technology by
Andrew Gideon
Someone gave an ADS-B presentation at our club's meeting last night. It
was terrific, but some interesting questions were asked. I'm wondering if
anyone happens to know the answers or if someone can point me to a
reference.
ADS-B ground stations appear to have a range of about 150 miles,...

Passport or no? by
Robert M. Gary
I thought I was going to have to spent $300 to get passports for my
wife and kids when coming back from Mexico next year but now I'm not
sure. Reading AOPA's site
http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/newsitems/2005/050412passport_info.html
They claim that after Dec 31st "will be required to have a passport...

Camping on Madeline Island by
Jay Honeck
So, tomorrow morning, at 0-dark-thirty, my 15-year-old son and I are
blasting off for "Up North" -- in this case, Madeline Island, just
off-shore in Lake Superior. Atlas is loaded to the gunwales with
bikes, tents, coolers, food -- you name it. We've got two days.
Mary and I went there a couple...

AvWeb site makeover by

AvWeb just implemented a site makeover.
Looks different, not as busy.
Too bad they didn't test it before releasing the new format. Dead links,
missing content, and broken image links all over the place.

KGAI approach in danger by
Wiz
See this regarding the brilliant plan to put high-rise senior housing
towers in the approach path, just 900 feet from the end of the runway,
at Montgomery County Airpark, Gaithersburg, Maryland. Local pilots and
AOPA are weighing in, but reports indicate low pilot turnout, and the
developers seem...

Interesting New Squadron Slated For Cannon AFB by
Marco Leon
Described as "A new squadron to handle AFSOC's growing mission of
flying small, civilian-style aircraft to carry special operations
troops without attracting the attention that a C-130 does. "
So we can be flying a "warbird" and not even know it!
However, talk about bursting a pilot's bubble:...

Cockpit Rage by
birdog
A little humor? I can't vouch personally for this story, but it was told to
me by a pilot as the truth, and does have a humorous tint.
It was during the slow-down by the controllers at the major terminals - that
was when? - the early '60's? - at Chicago O'Hare. Planes were stacked up
waiting to...

Excellent Series On Cargo Flying by
Mortimer Schnerd, RN
Most of the stuff I've seen in the papers about flying freight usually misses
the mark by focusing on Fedex or UPS. This series of three articles focuses on
freight dogs. I think the author hit the nail on the head. The only weakness
is that not every freight accident I can think of is...

Saab 340 air conditioning? by
John Clonts
A colleague of mine said he flew on a Saab 340 on a hop from Waco to
Dallas. It was a hot afternoon and was hot in the cabin. He said he
was told be a flight attendant that the Saab 340 does not have air
conditioning, only "air handling". That seems incredible to me! Would
a/c even be optional...

What to do about North Korea...? by

Uh oh:

The news is reporting that they've launched FOUR missiles now --
possibly one that can reach the U.S. mainland...
I wonder what our Air Force guys in South Korea are doing right now...

Alien training rule by

The AOPA "Guide to TSA's Alien Flight Training/Citizenship Validation

training for "recreational pilot, sport pilot, or private pilot
certificate; multiengine rating; or instrument training". If I've got an

747 Lawnmower ?..............Yes, this is real, a flying Lawnmower by

If you up there in the Cockpit, look out of the window and see an
Lawnmower, don't be alerted, you are not crazy. They now have flying
Lawnmowers. The same group of Hobby-ingenieurs also developed a flying
doghouse and working on a flying Washmachine and a flying...

piper cargo twin crashes in eastern washington by
steve
Just heard about this on the morning news. Apparently pilot with 4 months
with the company had trouble maintaining altitude and attempted a landing at
the Easton, WA airstrip. It sounds like he came up short and crashed into
some trees, then cartwheeled and burst into flames.
This is tragic,...

OSH N40 Camping with Cessna reservations by

My dad and I are flying into OSH for the first time this year (rented a car
from ORD last year)and plan to camp with the plane (NOT a Cessna). We
intend to fly to Jay's Sat, then fly with them on Sunday mid-day to the
North 40.
I'm a little concerned about how the 500 spaces that are reserved...

Hand propping - licensed pilot at the controls? by

Is there an FAR or other document (Advisory Circular etc.)

The FAA continues it's war on General Aviation by
FlipSide
This is completely unecessary and idiotic.
If the FAA had their way they would disallow any VFR flying in the US
period.
So what would additional ADIZ training entail? How do you implement it
and how do you verify that pilots have had the training. How is it
documented? Do you have a special...
