Glider to ASEL Conversion by
solo89
I got my ticket to fly gliders about a year ago.
I love soaring, but I'm growing a little tired of the weather demands
of the sport. In the southeast, it's been hard lately to get VFR
conditions. Add to that the requirement of thermals and it's been
mighty hard to fly lately.
Which has me...

Oshkosh FRS & Othersuch Frequencies by
Jim Weir
Anybody got a real good reason not to use:
FRS Channel 3 (no PL) for around the field (we found it to be the least crowded
of the channels last year, but if I catch one more kid screaming obscenities
into their little radios...).
Ham 2-meter 145.75 simplex both air and ground (52 simplex is...

Confused about great circle navigation by
xerj
Not that it matters terribly much, but there's a few things I don't get.
On a WAC, which is a Lambert chart, a straight line is more or less a great
circle, right? However, to fly a great circle, you have to constantly adjust
your heading. I still can't conceptually work out why, I must say....

Learned more today - what to buy? by
Grasshopper
Flew today, as did my wife. The owner of the school was also very helpful.
My mistake was looking for a specific plane, instead of methodically
deciding what my requirements were. Also, some of the kids said they did
not want to fly with us on weekends, which lowered the requirements a...

Long--But Amusing by
Rosspilot
I ran across this . . . sorry it's long, but there *are* some gems mixed into
this collection . . . also some Bravo Sierra . . . but entertaining
nonetheless. I especially like the last line.

IFR Practice Lesson Learned by
Matt Young
Today I learned a lesson about practicing IFR flight. I was practicing
with another member of our flying club who is a private pilot, but not
instrument rated, coming back from Rogers, AR to Fort Smith after a
pancake breakfast fly-in. Fort Smith was landing 7. My safety pilot
wanted to fly just...

Peterborough Ontario by
Rob McDonald
Are there any Peterborough area pilots here?
My wife wants to go to Ottawa for the weekend (Canadian Aviation Museum
here I come :-) I thought that Peterborough would make a good lunch & leg
stretching stop. It is almost exactly half way from Port Elgin. Is there a
restaurant at the airport? If so...

Transient alternator problem by
Jeremy Lew
Was flying IFR in the clear on top of an overcast layer today. I noticed at
some point that the ammeter was indicating zero, and not moving. The Alt
warning light was not illuminated, except when I pressed the test button. I
started to shut down non-essential electriconics in case this was for...

296 seeing small airports in 50nm scale by
Robert M. Gary
I just pulled by Skymap IIIc out and relaced it with the Garmine 296.
There are certainly things I like better about the large screen IIIc
but I really like the crisp colors of the 296 and the fast update
rate. The turn coordinator seems really good and may work in a real
IMC emergency. In anycase,...

help - whiskey compass has gone wild by
Jim
The wet compass in my Cessna 150 has suddenly decided to indicate way off.
I took it off the dash mount and it reads nearly correctly when moved about
12" away from the instrument panel, and even better when out in the open by
itself. I got another wet compass from a friend, and as I moved it near...

Water Injection Question by
DeltaDeltaDelta
A couple of days ago, I saw a picture of a DC-8, i think, taking off,
trailing thick black smoke from the engines (they weren't on fire). The
description of the picture said that it was using water injection to give
more power for takeoff. I also came across this when reading about the P-47.
How...

Why is this on topic for this forum? Face it, even if the next terrorist
action is carried out with trained hamsters marching down 42 ND street with
little explosive backpacks, shutting down general aviation will be a
centerpiece of the response.
