how can you get live METAR data ? by
Bravo
For you computer savvy folks in the newsgroup..... if I wanted to build a
web page for my airport that provided live METAR data, where could I get the
data from ? I see that the NWS web site has free software for decoding the
METAR codes, but where and how do you get the current weather data ? ...

"Rescue" flight, PPL by
Joe Johnson
Last week, as I returned to my rental FBO after an evening local flight, the
clerk on duty said an instructor and his student were stuck at an airport
about 40 minutes away. I spoke to the instructor on the phone and I agreed
to fly up and bring them back. He mentioned that, of course, I...

USS Ronald Reagan Question by
Jay Honeck
Someone has posted some cool pix from the launch of the new super carrier
over on the binary channel (alt.binaries.pictures.aviation), which got me
wondering...
Is the new USS Ronald Reagan a *replacement* carrier? If so, which one is
being retired?
Or did we just add another battle group to the...

New Orleans Lakefront Airport by
Dan Luke
CNN video: NEW looks bad; partially under water. Heavy damage to most
buildings, particularly the large Millionaire FBO west of 18/36.
Wonder how long it will be before we make the $100 muffaletta trip to
Lakefront again--if indeed we ever do?

FCC talking about relaxing cell phone rules by
Reid & Julie Baldwin
The news lately has mentioned that the FCC is meeting to discuss relaxing
the ban on using cell phones in airplanes. Most of the news coverage focuses
on the implications for airline passengers. They said that the FAA would
also
have to change rules before airline passengers could use cell...

Headwinds, always by
Paul kgyy
I just returned from an 8-day tour of the midwest. This was a 6-leg
circular route west to Des Moines from Chicago, then up to the Dakotas,
back through Duluth, Green Bay. We mostly flew at 7000 ft. We had
20-30 knot headwinds on 5 of the 6 legs and never once a tailwind.

Marine Radio using Aviation Antennae by
Jim Weir
Will it work? Probably.
Will it work well? That depends on what "well" means.
Will it work at peak efficiency. No.
In all probability, your reception will probably be acceptable. The transmitter
protection circuitry may (high probability) prevent you from getting any decent
transmitter range.

Chester County (PA) Airport 40N, why not all-letter ID? by
Jamie Rogers
This airport has weather reporting via an AWOS. Yet its
identifier is still 40N. Other airports have had their
identifier changed to a 3 letter (well 4 including the K
prefix) when they got weather reporting capability. So why
has Chester County G O Carlson Airport remained as...

FAA's Answer to ATC Retirement Bubble Staffing Shortfall by
Larry Dighera
Isn't a policy that reduces staffing, and then authorizes mandatory
overtime (with its federally mandated time-and-a-half pay rate) just a
bit irrational?
UNION: FAA "STAFFING TO BUDGET"
The FAA seems intent on challenging long-established norms in
terms of staffing levels,...

Perfect loop by

My aerobatic traing is going very well, I'm having all the fun I
thought it should provide. So far I haven't messed up a manouver but
I'm nagged by the thought: How can I tell if my loops are perfect
circles? At present I go to full power at the vertical phase and over
the top but then throttle...

Why do pilots need a medical by
Andrew Sarangan
The recent questions about medical certificate, paper trail, sport
pilot etc.. etc..got me thinking. What is the reasoning behind
requiring a medical for pilots? Why is a minor medical condition
disqualifying for flying a Cessna 172, when the same person can drive a
20,000 lb truck on public roads?...

Demand that Obama release his college records! Where is the media? by
Micky
Why is it important to see Obama's college records? Because the media
has created fantasies around Obama on every issue. You should start
dispelling them with the easiest one, i.e. the fantasy of Obama's
"academic degrees and honors".
Obama has been fighting desperately to block all access to his...

Private Pilot without Medical -- Sport Pilot operation? by

I am a private pilot without a current medical, but with a valid
drivers license. Can I fly under the sport pilot rules, or do I need
to apply for a sport pilot certificate? I have never been denied a
medical.

Here are some conversations that airline passengers normally

between airline pilots and control towers around the world.
