I fly a Ventus CT with a Cambridge 302 and an Ipaq using Winpilot. Flying yesterday I checked the IAS shown on the 302, I noticed that it is giving totally different readings to the mechanical ASI. eg at 50kts on the mechanical, the 302 showed 40kts at 70kts the 302 showed 63 kts. Freedom's Wings Canada, a charitable collaborative that offers rides and instruction to the disabled community, was in Ottawa at the Gatineau Gliding Club this past week. We had a request from a blind lady for a ride, and after some hesitation, agreed. Here is the account of her day she sent...

Ikarus Bison as tow plane by [email protected]
We had a demo today of an Ikarus. The rep told us that there is a version that is used to tow gliders in Europe and will tow up to 1,433 lbs (650 Kg.) If anyone has experience with this aircraft towing gliders, could you give me your thoughts...how well does it tow, climb rate, heaviest glider it...

Contest Safety by birddog bob
Why don't people in SRA and SSA get the message about contest safety? A unnecessary loss of life because the FINISH GATE was used and not a FINISH CYLINDER. Charlie Spratt and the top racing pilots want the finish gate at contests because it is so exciting! All the near misses in the pull ups and...

Question about a Janus C and Duo Discus by Mark Lenox
I just read the description of the new Duo-Discus "X", and they made a point to mention the landing gear controls are now operable from the back seat. Having flown a Duo only a couple of times, and from the front seat only, I never noticed they weren't available in back. Is the landing gear...

SSA Members-only NEWS? by RichardFreytag
I visited the SSA site and like the redesign! But I am disappointed to find that much of it is for members-only. Dear SSA directors and webmaster(s), information is advertising - not even the NYTimes can make information a reason to buy subscriptions! You hide information from the world and you...

Winpilot Polar Data for LS8-18 by Jürgen Becker
Hi everybody, I wonder I can get the polar data of my LS8-18 in the 18 meter configuration - no problem with the 15 meter version so far - to put it in the Winpilot polar file. I guess there is a possibility to figure that out for oneself, but I hope there is someone out there who already has...

Sailplane polar comparison software by Mr David Donald
Some years ago, I was able to download an excel spreadsheet that compared two gliders (via drop down boxes). It displayed their polars in different colours against each other. It also showed their sink rates at speed. My computer has crashed and I'm trying to find a copy. Anyone got one out...

Hi, I've been overwhelmed with phone and e-mail questions from glider pilots trying to understand all the options for cradles for the PDA they are using. To help with those decisions I have created a PDA Cradle Selection Table. Let me know if you are aware of other cradle options that I should add...

Haven't seen any postings, with regard to todays plan, as of 11am central, but I'd say the day is done, based on the forecast. Low ceilings and spotty showers. Anyone know differently? Thanks!

How much water for a 1000K attempt? by ttaylor at cc.usu.edu
I am working on the planning for a 1000K attempt. One question I have is how much water should I launch with in my Ventus B? I can carry up to 40 gallons (150 liters), but for a 1000K flight I will need to launch in early weak conditions, followed by strong conditions latter in the day. Options...
