Seeking advice- checkride tips by
Terence Wilson
I'm scheduled for the instrument check-ride in a couple of weeks. I
feel like I can perform within the PTS, but I'm a little" rough around
the edges" and prone to at least one stupid screw-up per flight, most
of the time I catch the screw-ups myself and fix them in a reasonable
time.
That said, I...

Confusion by
Jon Woellhaf
I recently filed IFR and received a clearance from Ground. As part of the
clearance, I was told, "... after departure turn left heading 300 ..." I
taxied to the active, did my run-up, called Tower and said I was ready for
departure. I was soon cleared for takeoff.
At about 1000 AGL, I began the...

U.S. Government Lays Groundwork for Talmudic Courts by
Mighty Thor
U.S. Government Lays Groundwork for Talmudic Courts
US government under Presidents Reagan, Bush and Clinton, has
provided, under the euphemism of education (for example, House Joint
Resolution 173 and Public Law 102-14), a groundwork for the
establishment of Talmudic "courts of justice" to be...

Aspen Avionics by
No Name
I was intrigued at Oshkosh with Aspen Avionics gyro and hsi steam gauge
replacements. They have a LCD solid-state ADHRS gyro and HSI that fits into
the same slots as the steam gauges. Anybody have any experience with these
instruments? Are they shipping yet? I assume they are using these new...

The FAA is marching toward sole dependence on GPS. by
WolfRat
The FAA is marching toward sole dependence on GPS. The FAA
engineers and controllers are screaming from the
mountaintops PLEASE do not single thread North American
airspace navigation on satellite only. Yes GPS is awesome.
Yes GPS has and will change our lives. But the signal is
small and...

Blakey explains by
Steve
From today's issue of Parade 'magazine' (in the Sunday paper):
Q: What has gone wrong with air travel?
A: (from Marion Blakey) We're in the safest period in aviation
history, but some of our current system is built on World War II
technology. **Planes must fly on specific highways in the sky...

Open letter from a retired FAA controller by
WolfRat
If you are eligible for retirement from the FAA I hope you
are counting the hours until January 3, 2008 (for CSRS
employees.) For FERS employees, the magic day is December
31, 2007 according to this article.
But regardless of which date you choose---you should choose
one of them and GET LOST....

Who's Boss? by
Wyatt Emmerich[_2_]
I'm flying into my home base KHKS at night in a single engine airplane. At
no point have I been outside of glide range to an airport. I am VFR shooting
a practice full approach in Class C airspace going into a Class D airport.
The controller wants me to descend to 2,000 feet five miles before...

My trip from EKY to MBO on Tuesday.
One has to love that IA rating as it's quite amazing how to go from
VMC to IMC in such a short distance

ILS 16R at KRNO by
nick name
The ILS 16R (http://tinyurl.com/353gd5) at Reno (KRNO) has the
notation:
"8500 to GS intercept 181 (2) and LOC (8.8)"
I don't understand this. It appears this means that GS intercept will
occur in 2 miles on a 181 heading and that LOC intercept will occur in
8.8 miles. Neither appears to be true...

LPV versus LNAV/VNAV versus LNAV+V by
Wyatt Emmerich[_2_]
Searching the newsgroup archives, I have been unable to find the technical
distinction between LPV, LNAV/VNAV and LNAV+V approaches. I do not mean the
legal and procedural differences. I mean what are the technical differences
of the GPS that makes one more accurate than the other. In other...

Video of approaches in IMC by
[email protected]
Went up to touch some clouds today.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHC-s9cl8cE
Using the same technique in creating my last video, put the camera on
the glareshield and pretty much set it and forgot it. While I was VMC,
I did capture some "forward" scenery.
Great day for flying, tops were...
