Power Port in BACK seat? by
Jay Honeck
Has anyone installed one in a Spam Can?
With the advent of laptops and portable DVD/CD players, it would seem
logical to have some sort of a power port in the back seat -- yet I have
never seen one.
My kids could sure use one!

Removing old antennas by
Jay Honeck
Is it worth the bother?
We're coming up on our annual inspection in May, and there are at least four
antennas on our bird that do nothing. I'll bet there's a few feet of cable
going to each one, too.
Does removing an antenna net you any extra speed, or is it mainly a weight
reduction...

$429 Dimmer Switch by
Jay Honeck
And it's not even for the Dept. of Defense! :-)
For those of you thinking about airplane ownership (and I know you're
lurking out there!), we just got the bill to replace one of the two dimmer
switches (and a few light bulbs) in our Pathfinder's panel.
$104 in parts, 5 hours labor (It's a real...

Rogue's Gallery of Rec.Aviation Pix -- February Update by
Jay Honeck
As most of you know, the "Rogue's Gallery" is a picture website created
solely for the use of Rec.Aviation pilots. Here we can all post pictures of
our beautiful aircraft, so that the rest of us can drool all over them! :-)
Here are the February...

I am NOT superstitious by
Jay Honeck
....And just to prove it, I will announce the following to the aviation
world:
Yesterday, for the first time since I bought Atlas in 2002, EVERYTHING in
the panel worked as designed all at the same time!
Both radios (one new), both VORs (one new), both GPS's (one new), the
transponder (new), the...

Anyone wrapped their yokes in leather? by
Jay Honeck
We've got a bag full of leather scraps, left over from our new interior job
last fall. I would like to wrap our yokes with it, so that they match the
seats and throttle cover.
Anyone ever done this? I don't want to just wind the stuff around and have
it look like crap in a few months.
Should I...

Effect of suction on DG by
Jay Honeck
In the last couple of months we have replaced both vacuum instruments (DG
and AI) as well as all vacuum hoses.
Immediately after this was done, I noticed our suction was lower than
before. It would top out in the 4.8 region -- at the very low end of the
acceptable scale.
At the same time we also...

Best Clock? by
Jay Honeck
The old wind-up clock in my Pathfinder has become sporadic at best. When it
was below zero here, it didn't work at all.
Any recommendations on a replacement?

Shock *Heating*? by
Jay Honeck
In another thread (about cold starting) it was mentioned that Alaskan bush
pilots routinely drain their oil, take it inside, and heat it on the stove
before starting in the morning.
While this guarantees a warm(er) engine, wouldn't this risk damage to the
engine from shock heating (assuming there...

The warped world of airplane ownership by
Jay Honeck
It's been too damned cold here to change my oil, so we took the plane over
to our A&P's heated hangar this morning to have it done. He offered to let
us do the work inside, if all we wanted was to borrow his heated hangar -- a
kind offer that Mary wanted NOTHING to do with!
So, we left him to his...

Repairing Plastic by
Jay Honeck
The faceplate on my Narco CP-136 Audio Panel was broken off (and glued back
together) before I bought the plane. The left side of the faceplate, where 2
retaining screws attach it to the metal chassis, had been glued at least
once before I bought it, and my avionics shop had glued it back together...

Downloading Flying Music by
Jay Honeck
We've got the PS Engineering CD/Intercom in our plane, and listen to CDs on
long trips.
I am obviously slipping into "dinosaur" status, as I have never downloaded
music, for "burning" onto a blank CD. I *have* burned CDs, but I've always
done it from tracks played off of another CD.
Does anyone...

Gravel as opposed to aspalt runway by
Jay Honeck
I am looking at a plane. It is at a private gravel airstrip. I usually
fly off aspalt runways.. Would flying off a gravel strip hurt the plane
landing gear, etc as opposed to aphalt runways?
Check the paint -- if there's any left -- on the under-side of the elevator.
That'll tell the...

Audio Panel Recommendations by
Jay Honeck
My Narco audio panel works just fine. However, the faceplate has been glued
back together twice by my avionics shop. (How it got broken in the first
place is anyone's guess...)
In the recent intense cold, the epoxy has let go again, so I think it's time
to replace the unit. Other than requiring...

Building chasing airport lights -- Attn: Jim Weir? by
Jay Honeck
Today a pilot-guest had the coolest idea for the side-entrance to our lobby:
"Chasing" lights recessed in the drop-ceiling tiles, leading to the main
lobby area, that look just like the "rabbit" lights that lead to the
approach end of a runway!
(Background: Over half of our guests come in the...

PIREP - Garmin GTX-327 by
Jay Honeck
I obtained this unit on Ebay nearly a month ago, from an avionics shop in
Bakersfield, CA. The unit had been installed in a plane for precisely one
day before that owner had decided that he REALLY wanted the Mode S GTX-330,
with traffic information capability.
The shop couldn't sell it as new...
