Logging Actual Time by
Brenor Brophy
Last weekend I flew my first Angel Flight from MRY down to SMO. There was
the remnants of a cold front that passed through the day before between the
Bay Area and LA so there was plenty of clouds hanging around, mostly
build-ups over the mountains with tops 90 to 110 and some lower layers
BKN30. So...

Class B bust my fault or the controllers ? by
Antoņio
Today I flew into KBFI (Boeing field) which is class D and has
extentions that underlie the Class B that require close attention to
altitudes and headings so as to stay clear. Today the winds were
favoring 31L (and 31R) and I came in from the west on the Vashon
approach--the most common approach...

Misleading Notam by
Greg Esres
One of our local pilots misunderstood a common Notam, as shown below.
He thought the "ADD: From Shelby to RW 17: 3.52 degrees" meant add
3.52 degrees to the final approach course.
How reasonable do you think his interpretation?
(BTW, the notam just adds a descent gradient to a NP approach.)
FDC...

Pressure & temperature by
Terence Wilson
I'm confused about what determines the local altimeter setting. My
understanding is that there is a barometer in the tower that measures
the weight of a column air extending up into the atmosphere. What
factors affect its weight? Is it purely temperature variations caused
by uneven heating by the...

Real World test bed for avionics - Megawatts at Delano by
MikeremlaP
Thought there used to be an "avionics" subgroup, but I guess not.
Cross posting this in .products & .experimental.
If you want a good real world test of how hardened your equipment is to RFI,
fly over to Delano, California and fly the pattern for 32L. That puts you
about 2 miles from the Voice...

Planning a flight by
Chris
I have the chance to fly from Madison, Wi (MSN) to Providence, Ri (PVD) in
July and was wondering about the most favoured route. I will be flying IFR
The most direct seems to be straight across Lake Michigan, north of Detroit
through Lower Ontario in Canada, Buffalo, Albany and then down to PVD. ...

Boom mounted O2 cannula by
Viperdoc
I seem to remember seeing a nasal cannula that clipped to a microphone boom?
The usual loop around the ears models interfere with the anr headsets and
are a pain to put on.
Thanks.

How Quickly Things Can Turn! by
three-eight-hotel
This, by no means is as exciting or interesting as some of the other
threads I have followed, but serves as a constant reminder to me, how
quickly things can change!
Wanting to get my plane down to Cameron Park before Feb 1. for an
annual, I determined that yesterday was probably my best...

Enroute charts valid for use in Canada? by
Andrew Sarangan
The enroute chart for the border states include a significant portion of
Canada. Is this sufficient for IFR into Canada? The VFR sectional contains
a warning that the airspace classification may be different in Canada and
that the pilot should consult the Canadian Flight Supplement. But the...

Compass turns revisited by
Bob Gardner
Got a little memory jog in the April 2006 Designee Update...other than
"Basic Instrument Flight Maneuvers," there is nothing in the 2004 (latest)
PTS about timed turns OR compass turns. Nothing. Nada. So instrument pilot
wannabes need not be concerned about demonstrating either one to the
examiner....

crazy approaches by
buttman
My flight school, got a new Frasca simulator which has every airport in
the world in it's database. I want to be able to make my students fly
all sorts of weird/unusual/difficult approaches, but the only
approaches that I am familiar with are the ones around here.
There was this one my instructor...

Nexrad versus on-board radar by
Wyatt Emmerich
Flying back from Atlanta to Jackson, my Echo Flight finally received its
downloaded Nexrad data. It showed me flying right in the middle of a big
blotch of red. I look outside the window. I'm in light 40 F light drizzle
with ceilings of about 6000 above a broken 2000 layer. I turn on...

Jepp Charts - Subscription Only? by
Peter Gibbons
Went to my local pilot shop this week to pick up some new IFR charts,
and noticed a sign near the cash register that stated that Jepp charts
were now only available on a subscription basis through Jepp.
I've only ever used NOS charts, but had heard how good Jepp charts
were and was interested in...

DUAT preferred routes vs. Jepp by
Andrew Gideon
Planning a flight from CDW to CQX, I found in Jepp one route: BREZY V39
CMK V3 HFD V167 PVD V151 GAILS.
DUAT offers another: FALLZ V3 JEWIT V167 PEAKE
Am I likely to get the DUAL routing if I request it? I'm surprised that
it would yield something different from Jepp. Admittedly, it's not
much...
