Personal Eye In The Sky by a[_3_]
Taken from an on line news article, but I've removed the name of the pilot. Pilot NNNNNNNN was flying his personal plane from North Carolina to his Florida home when he decided to fly over his house and saw something unusual. "He observed a silver truck with white camper in his driveway and...

NOTAM: low level IFR pending by a[_3_]
My grandson, on the cusp of not taking Santa seriously, asked me about him. He knows a little about aviation slang so I told him that IFR means I fly reindeer and that it's a special thing the FAA allows at low levels only one night a year, and that at low level it's not a threat to other airplanes...

Now here's a short airplane ride I think many of us would pay good money to take. http://vholdr.com/video/lap-around-boat

Bertie, aka [email protected] by a[_3_]
Just noticed something, guys. Bertie used to use that @aa.aa as the return email address. If you look at information on google groups you'll find that address has been banned for "violating terms of agreement" earlier this month so it would appear Bertie has changed email/signon...

It's evident that the findings cited here http://www.livescience.com/animals/060802_brain_prey.html apply to humankind as well. The report reminds us that predators prefer dimwitted prey. What a surprise! What is odd is that dimwitted predators manage to thrive, too.

AOPA Expo 2007 by B A R R Y
I live 15 minutes from AOPA Expo 2007, and I'm temporarily based at HFD. I'd be more than happy to arrange a R.A.P get together! The Hartford area has some fine Brew Pubs. It's a few weeks off, and I know half the NG is at OSH... Email me direct @ barry at bburke dot com with interest.

Jet jocks and airliner drivers? by B A R R Y
Dudley, Bertie, Bob Moore, Capt. Doug... On my recent viewing of the A380 low and slow passes over some P&W locations, I remarked how quiet the airplane was. During these passes the aircraft was noticeably pitched up (maybe 150 knots?), and slightly "dirty", just as the far simpler craft I...

A380 Fly-by! by B A R R Y
This morning, at ~ 0800 EDT, I got to watch the A380 make a low pass of a Pratt & Whitney facility, complete with a wing wave! Damn... That thing is BIG. (Coming from a guy who regularily sees C-5's in flight!).

Icom A24 w/ PTT and headset mic by B A R R Y
I use my A24 lots, for listening to ASOS, communicating to aircraft at fly-ins, ordering fuel, etc... I rarely use it with a headset. The other night, I had a full-on comm failure and needed to use it while aloft, with a headset. It took me a few minutes to remember, but my radio keys only the...

Absolute CLASSIC phone call! by B A R R Y
My current home base (a busy Delta airport, which also has a turf runway) is the temporary base for the Met Life blimp, in town for a PGA tournament. Last night, may co-owner calls me from the tie down (in the dark), and the following conversation ensues: Him: Check it out! There's a killer...

Ground control vs. clearance delivery for VFR by B A R R Y
My local Delta base (HFD) will contact nearby BDL TRACON and obtain a squawk code for VFR flight following or traffic advisories. This service is "advertised" on the ATIS and is requested from ground control on initial call up by departures. Ground calls you back with a code and the proper...

AOPA Flight Planner problem by B A R R Y
Does anyone know where the Hartford (CT) VOR (HFD) went? G My installation seems to be missing HFD all of a sudden. V99, V3, and V58 end at a white hole. It was there last week! Does anyone else have this problem, or is it my installation? Thanks!

Advanced rating training as Wings credit by B A R R Y
I'm currently about 1/2 way to my instrument rating. I've noticed that my recent training has included most of the standard "Wings" recurrent maneuvers, albeit under the hood. If this instruction counts, I believe all I need to cover are emergency procedures to meet the requirements. I...

PC based Instrument rating course opinions? by B A R R Y
Folks, As I train for my instrument rating, I'm in need of a CD based ground school. I'm familiar with the King courses, as I used the King PP-ASEL kit to help with my Private. I also took an instructor led PP ground school, which only taught me how much I learned from the CD's. Before I pull...

BDR clarification by B A R R Y
Over the last few days, I've made some incorrect statements regarding landing fees @ BDR. I stated my co-owner had been billed $6 for a T&G. WRONG! I had the facts confused. G He was billed $6 for a full-stop IFR arrival. He even bought fuel, which was mhy he was surprised by the...

Developers eyeing one of my local fields by B A R R Y
For those who haven't been here, HFD isn't exactly a backwoods airport, and is location of AOPA Expo 2007. Some local folks would like to close it: http://www.courant.com/news/local/hr/hc-riverfrontsouth0421.artapr21,0,3235726.story

Interesting info relating to recent discussions here from an FAASeminar I attended last night by B A R R Y
Right from the local FSDO's mouth: #1.) Pretty much anyone can taxi an airplane. The airlines send non-pilots to the simulator to learn, but that's apparently a company decision. Part of this program discussed an accident where two NWA mechanics hit a parked 757 and a Jetway while destroying...
