CPO humor by
JD
Three men are sitting stiffly side by side on a long commercial flight.
After they're airborne and the plane has leveled off, the man in the window
seat abruptly says, distinctly and confidently, in a low voice,
"General, United States Army, retired. Married, two sons, both surgeons."
After a few...

Whidbey Island Survival School by
JD
When I was in the P3 community (VP31), I was sent to NUW for Survival
School. I forget how long it lasted, but I recall the "ogre muthas" giving
us a time or two. It was cold and wet (February) and I recall they bused
us out to some mountain for snow survival. I have no idea where the...

question RE F-18 by
JD
The new F-18 two seater (is it 'E' or 'F'??) was the topic of conversation
last evening and we got to wondering if the backseater was a Naval Aviator
or a Naval Aviation Officer. The backseater of the old F4 didn't have
controls. I don't think the F-14 did either. What about the new F-18...

President Bush is doing well. by
JD
Subject: Our worst president?
Liberals claim President Bush shouldn't have started this war. They
complain about his prosecution of it. One liberal recently claimed Bush was
the worst president in U.S. history.
Let's clear up one point: America didn't start the war on terror. Try to
remember,...

Maybe GWB isn't lying........ by
JD
The media and most democrats charge President Bush lied to the American
people and led us into a war over oil. Even if you disregard GWB 1 and the
war re Kuwait, in any attempt to be fair, you have to take these quotes into
consideration:
"One way or the other, we are determined to deny Iraq the...

P-3 accident VP-26 1968 off Phu Quoc Island by
JD
The above P-3 (BUNO 153440) crashed into the ocean, killing all crewmembers,
during a Market Time patrol over the Gulf of Siam. It was just after I got
out of the Navy and I never heard the cause of the accident. We did hear
the accident was the result of "combat action", but as is so often...

NAS OAKLAND? by
Jdf4cheval
Over a few beers today with a former Marine and sailor from the Fifties, "NAS
Oakland" was mentioned. The Marine recalled it was in the old section of what
is now Oakland Internatinal Airport. One of the surviving buildings may still
have Navy wings on it. Has anyone else heard of NAS OAKLAND?

NAS Alameda O-Club by
Jdf4cheval
Does anyone remember where it was from the entrance gate? The USS Hornet museum
is berthed to the left along the waterfront, but I can't remember where the
O-club was. I've been invited to a gathering there, and can't even find an old
map of the station. Thanks!

Old Orions at Honolulu? by
Jdf4cheval
Taking off from Honolulu International yesterday, I happened to look out the
window of the B 757 and caught what looked like four P-3s in the USN color
scheme used before dull all-grey became the standard. They were almost directly
below, and we were gone before I could clearly make them out. They...

F-14 Tomcat story. by
JDupre5762
I was told a story once by someone who worked at Grumman concerning the F-14.
It seems that one day a crew took up an F-14 and shortly after take off found
that the pitch controls (elevons?) were stuck causing the aircraft to pitch up
uncontrollably. By increasing power the crew was able to keep...

Marlin P5M crash 1954. by
JDupre5762
My father in law has told me an interesting story about a crash of a Martin P5M
Marlin flying boat patrol bomber. The crash occured in 1954 near Horta, Azores
Islands. My father in law was on board the seaplane tender Currituck AV 7.
Apparently Pan Am flying boats used to take off from the harbor...

can be sure who hit the detonators that destroyed the mine.

1930s Navy side numbers. by
JDupre5762
I have a photograph of three Grumman F3F biplane fighters in formation. Thier
side numbers all begin with 2-MF and then different numbers in the third and
last position. I believe 2 stands for the Carrier Lexington CV 2. What does
MF stand for? Marine Fighter? Did Marine fighter squadrons...
