commander and being commissioned in 82 wearing A/O wings on his uniform. In
my limited 16 year career (med disch not retired) I never once seen...

Aw Rating merger and Today's ASW by
Charlie Wolf
Well - in keeping with the recently posted NG charter for this joint,
I offer this up:
Do group members here think this is a good idea?? My days as an AW
(S-3A's & B's) concentrated on sub-hunting and aviation acoustic
analysis, ISAR RADR, MAD, et al. But merging the rating with mechs
and metal...

Aw ****s and Bravo Zulus by

Everyone knows that one wipes out a career full of attaboys. What is your
favorite non-fatal "aw ****" story? I thought we could also make a thread and
tell about the best flying each of us encountered.
On Ike in 1980, we had Whales. Either one or two of the massive things, but

B-17s in Pacific during WW2 hypothetical by
[email protected]
I'm aware that B-17s attacked Japanese Shipping during WW2
(battle of Midway comes to mind), but that they were way too
high and didn't hit anything.
Speaking hypothetically, would it have radically improved anthing
if the B-17 attacked from a much lower altitude?
I'm thinking that the B-17 was...

B-17s straffing & IJN Aoba, & UK POWs by

While reading about the Japanese Heavy cruiser Aoba
(Unusual looking, with undulating decks, and remodel drasticly
changed what some consider 2 of the class, from 6 turrets to 3.)

I saw this unusual account:
"On April 3, ((1943)) while moored...

B-24 Liberator by

I have been doing some research and was amazed at the B-24's accident
rate. From April 10, 1944 to August 31,1944, the Replacement Training
Unit at Chatham AAF, Savannah, Georgia had 23 accidents. In those
accidents, nine of the B-24 were destroyed and there were 54 deaths.
My question: Was the...
