The A300 hit in Baghdad by
Jay Honeck
Over on the binary channel (alt.binaries.pictures.aviation) someone has
posted three amazing pictures of the A300 that was apparently hit by a SAM
while landing at Baghdad. One in flight picture shows the port wing in
flames.
Remarkable that they were able to get that thing on the ground...

Flying in the Bahama's - where to go??? by

Looking at a flying trip through the Bahama's from Florida, down towards
Venezuela (hopefully able to go around that and Columbia, thence Panama,
back to Florida. Bare bones in the planning stages so far; looking at places
to stay budget accomodation, things to do (diving, drinking beer etc),...

Wright model B crash on Nova by
Corky Scott
Finally got to see this program over Thanksgiving. Very interesting
but I don't understand what happened.
The assembly went very well and the engine was installed and run and
everyone was ready for the first flight when it started raining. It
rained and rained and rained for about a week. ...

transponder codes by
Guy Elden Jr.
Just got back from a _great_ trip down to Atlanta and back to Caldwell, NJ
over the Thanksgiving holiday. Departed 8:25am Tuesday morning with my wife
in a 172SP, got in around 3:50pm to Gwinett Field (LZU) after a 20 minute
fuel stop at Roanoke Regional (ROA). Trip back up was about an hour...

Private Pilot Oral by
Pete
Hey All,
Just started reading this group, and as soon as I complete my X
countries, I'll be more focused on my oral test prep.
I wanted to hear about others experiences during their Oral portion. So if
you would, share :)
Cheers

Guard Frequency Question by
G.R. Patterson III
As most of us have been doing these days, I spend a fair amount of flight time
listening to 121.5. This frequency has always had some sort of low level hiss
and crackle on it that I don't hear on other communications frequencies. Does
anyone know what causes this?
George Patterson
Some people...

Medical deferred by
Kevin Young
(Also posted to rec.aviation.student - apologies if you're reading it a
second time!)
My class 3 medical has been deferred to the FAA. I'd be grateful for any
advice on how to proceed and what to expect. Is this really as long and
convoluted a process as I've heard?
There are 2 companies that...

Anyone know how to update an old Loran database? by
Tom Jackson
I have looked around on the 'net, and cannot find any reference to being
able to update an old Apollo loran database (like can be done with the
modern GPS units.)
I have an Apollo 604, with the latest update (1999, I think.)
It seems to me, that there must be some tech-wizards out there who...

GPS Choices by
Sully
I was wondering if I could get some input from others on a few GPS's?
I have been looking at the Garmin 196 & Street Pilot III as well as
the Lowrance 500 & 1000.
The major advantage that I see with the 196 is that you can use it for
turn by turn directions in a vehicle. I have been looking at...

R/C Airplane Flight Characteristics by
Ralph the Red
Here's a good question. How come when you stall an R/C Airplane and kick
full aileron at it you can't get a stall spin like in real planes? I've
tried it with multiple R/C planes and never have seen anyone else have it
happen. Is it a weight or wing loading issue?

35 Airports In One Day Web Site by
Paul Magid
A couple of years back a pair of brothers (?) rented a Piper Arrow and flew
it to 35 airports in the San Francisco Bay Area starting at Reid Hillview
and ending up back there. One of them did a web site describing this
exploit. For the life of me, I can not find the web site. I really liked
that...

Characteristic airplane injuries by
Ben Jackson
The fuel selector in my Comanche is ringed by the pushbuttons that
let you read the quantity in tanks other than the selected tank. My
index finger is just long enough that I manage to scrape my knuckle on
one of these each time I switch tanks in a counter-clockwise direction.
In a Cessna 172D I...

Anyone see the report on the Weather Channel about the pilot who
crashed in the Rockies just west of Corons pass in late 1998? On the
way to Steamboat Springs from Boulder, got caught in a blizzard and
went down. No real injuries, and they were found by a cross country
skiier after a few hours. ...

getting one, but searching the net, I only find CXs and Techstars. Any...

Amazing Wind Shear Today by
Jay Honeck
We flew to Rantoul, IL today -- home of the Chanute Air Museum, on the site
of the former Chanute Air Force Base. The wind was predicted to be
howling -- winds aloft were calling for 54 knots at 6000 feet! -- but the
sun was shining, and we were enjoying our first Saturday off since last
Oshkosh....

Light Twins. How soft??? by
Montblack
I keep hearing "the market for Light Twins is soft."
Anyone have any tales to tell?
Are used Light Twins not selling these days, or are they selling for
what some would consider "bargain" prices, or both?
Did the economy's shake-up knock quite a few people out of the Twin
tree - people who were...
