Errors accessing FAA's Pilotweb by Mxsmanic
Is anyone else getting SSL security errors when trying to access the FAA Web site's Pilotweb pages? I tried to look up TFRs today and got an error message saying the certificate issuer was unknown. One URL that does this is: https://pilotweb.nas.faa.gov/center.html

Airliner crashes into Hudson River after LGA departure by Kingfish
Holy smokes! CNN is reporting an airliner went down in the Hudson after departing LaGuardia. I heard something about birdstrikes, but can't imagine a double engine failure due to that(?) They sure picked a cold day to go swimming... Hope everybody is ok...

Too Old? by Gezellig
Recently a 72 yo went blind in flight (stroke?) and safely landed in the drink in FL. Several comments were that age should be considered in keeping your PPL. I can see this makes sense /but/ it would prolly be illegal. Too old? If so, at what age do you place the cutoff?

Cirrus Lands via Parachute in Nantucket by Owen Rogers[_2_]
Looks like another save for BRS and Cirrus. Apparently a Cirrus was attempting to land ACK VFR last night when they ran into weather (fog and low visibility after sunset on the island are common in the summer). They pulled the Ballistic Recovery System parachute about 5 miles northeast of...

How do you find the limits of areas on a chart? by Mxsmanic
I see tons of restricted areas, MOAs, Class B, C, D, E airspace, and the like on charts, but no clear indication of how to locate the boundaries of these areas other than by pure guesstimate based on looking at the chart. On rare occasions I see a radial noted as the boundary of an area, or a...

MDW Overrun - SWA by Rick
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-051208midway,1,5533660.story?co ll=chi-news-hed&ctrack=1&cset=true Sadly there's one fatality, the first in SWA's history. I've driven past that intersection many times, and it's partly exhilarating and partly terrifying to have the jets take off so...

Why airplanes fly by Mxsmanic
Fixed-wing aircraft fly because their wings generate lift as they move forward through the air.

About those anti-aviatoin newsgroups by C J Campbell
We should be cautious about posting anything on these news groups. There is no way of convincing the mentally ill that airplanes are not a threat to them, so arguing with them is futile. At worst, somebody in these groups could find out about the rec.aviation news groups. This is a serious...

So what happens when 100LL is gone anyway? by [email protected]
ISTR there's only one company that still makes TEL (I think it's in the UK?) When they decide the cost isn't worth it, what then? Sure, the lower HP Lyc's and Cont's can probably run mogas without issue, but the higher HP turbo'd engines won't be so happy without lead. The FADEC mod being developed...

OK, what the hell has happened to the Brits? by Wdtabor
Now the British airline pilots are considering refusingto fly if there is an armed security guard on a flight, citing the danger of a gunshot in a pressurized airliner. http://www.guardian.co.uk/ukresponse/story/0,11017,863275,00.html What? Are they using "Goldfinger" as a training film there...

Is this the death of GA by [email protected]
I had an airplane that I had to sacrifice for graduate school 4 years ago. Now finish and looking to get back in the game, I find local avgas prices in my area range from over $6 to over $7!!! (Up from $2.30). I know the price of gas has gone up but man, those increases have been amplified in...

Comair Pilot Error by Andrew Sarangan
I am getting tired of comments like "controller should have warned the pilots", or "taxiway was confusing", or "runway lights were off" etc.. One could not find a better example of a pure and simple pilot error. The runway was clear, the weather was VFR, and the airplane was working fine. It is...

Greetings from your friendly, neighborhood, TERRORIST! by Peter R.
Nomen Nescio wrote: "You have to leave, NOW, sir!", he replied sternly. Now this brings up an interesting question. Are we, as US citizens on public land during peacetime, required to abide by the orders of military personnel? On what grounds did he have authority over your actions and...

I'm not a real Pilot? by David[_3_]
Once again, I'm not a real pilot. Yesterday my daughter was confronted at school by some (6th grade) classmates, they said her father was not a real pilot. To give you a little back history, my daughter is so proud of her father that she's always telling anyone she meets that her father is a...

Lots of posters here have fun bashing MX, but I have to say that one of the more enjoyable experiences I've had lately was sitting in the family room, in front of the PC. I am working on my instrument ticket. Ove the years I have collected the CH yoke and footpedals. I have downloaded a flight...

Mary and I just returned from a wonderful weekend at the Cherokee Pilots Association national fly-in, held annually in Osage Beach, Missouri, at the Tan-Tar-A resort. We had a wonderful time, catching up with old friends, and making new ones. We bought some cool stuff from the vendors, gave away...
