Confusion about when it's my navigation, and when it's ATC by
Mxsmanic
I fly from KLAX to KLAS, using the FMC to handle most of the flight.
With the routing I put in, the FMC decides on some default altitudes
and includes required altitudes for the arrival and departure
procedures I select. Part of what it does is to create a descent
schedule from the nominal cruise...

MS Flight Sim As a Training Tool by
Jay Honeck
Okay, I know this one has been beaten up before -- but my eyes are now
wide open to the possibilities a sim can provide. Here are a few data
points for discussion:
1. IFR Flight
Today I visited a friend (and fellow pilot) who heard about our new
flight sim, and has set up MS Flight Sim 2004 (not...

$640.00 to fill the tanks... by
Jay Honeck
Tony Snow, "technical advisor" for our aviation video webpage (Tony is
retired RAF, and has forgotten more about aviation than I'll ever
know), confirmed for me today that it would cost $640+ for me to top
off Atlas -- our Cherokee Pathfinder -- in Great Britain.
Imagine! $640 to go fly! This...

Mechanics of Elevator Trim. In Detail. by
Le Chaud Lapin
Hi All,
This post is primarily directed toward student pilots like myself.
First, I am not asking because I want to know the answer (I already
know), but do a little experiment. I have maybe 7 or 8 different
sources of flight information that I rely on for ground school
(Jeppesen, FAA Handbooks,...

Spinner strobing as a "Bird Strike Countermeasure" by
Jim Logajan
The following thread on the Van's Air Force web site was of general enough
interest that I thought it worthwhile to bring it to the attention of other
pilots:
http://www.vansairforce.com/community/showthread.php?t=24147
Would be quite useful if it really worked. Of course there would still be...

Future of Electronics In Aviation by
Le Chaud Lapin
Hi All,
I have noticed that each time this subject is broached, there seem to
be many who are perturbed by the idea of electronics/software assuming
a primary role (control, stabilization, etc.) in GA aircraft.
There are some who believe that electronics and software are sorely
underutilized. ...

Reno Air Races -- 2600 Miles in 2 Days! by
Jay Honeck
2600 miles -- in two days. Whew!
We're back from the Reno Air Races (two days early, sadly, to get out ahead
of a winter storm system that rolled into the Rockies on Friday afternoon),
and I'm here to tell you: Reno ROCKS!
I've never seen anything quite like it. In Reno, aircraft engines that...

Flight to Florida -- The Cure for Winter by
Jay Honeck[_2_]
6 days, 16.5 hours of flying, 2500 miles, all VFR. The perfect escape from a
brutal Iowa winter!
Here are few PIREPS from the journey:
- Thanks to great weather and a nice tailwind, I climbed to 5500 feet,
leveled out -- and never changed course or altitude again till we touched
down 4.8 hours...

"Cleared Straight-In Runway X; Report Y Miles Final" by
Jim Cummiskey
Hi, all. Ran into this one flying back from KOSH a couple weeks ago:
I check in with the KPRC controller "20 Miles NE" of Love Field in Prescott,
AZ. She clears me with "Cleared Straight-in Runway 21L, Report 5 miles
final."
I fly directly towards the numbers. My heading was approximately...

Can a Plane on a Treadmill Take Off? by
cjcampbell
Saw this question on "The Straight Dope" and I thought it was amusing.
http://www.straightdope.com/columns/060203.html
The question goes like this:
"An airplane on a runway sits on a conveyer belt that moves in the
opposite direction at exactly the speed that the airplane is moving
forward. Does...

Why are multiple engines different? by
Mxsmanic
Why is flying a multiengine aircraft a separate certification from the
basic license (if I understand correctly)? What is so different about
having more than one engine that justifies a separate certification?
Apart from a few procedures for the failure of an engine, isn't
everything else pretty...

Lancair crash at SnF by
Big John
AW&ST today had a small article that a Lancair piloted by Gerand
Schkolnk crashed moments after takeoff during the Sun and Fun AirShow.
He was director of Supersonic Technology Programs at Gulfstream.
Anyone have any data on accident other than what AW&ST had?

Piper Apache Performance by
Robert Bates
I'm thinking about buying an Apache but can't find performance data for a
160hp Geronimo or a turbo. Also, does anyone have real world data for a
180hp Geronimo rather than what's on the website?
