Soviet Ekranoplan redux, FWIW by Ogden Johnson III
During lunch time this afternoon, The History Channel reran one of their "History Undercover" series shows "Soviet Top Secret Weapons". Half the show was on the '50s era "Quebec" submarines, but the other half had good coverage, including film footage of the Roosian tests, of the development...

Chicken Cannon Lovers by Ogden Johnson III
Given the number of times the infamous "chicken cannon" has come up in these fora, your attention is directed to this evening's episode of "Mythbusters" on the Discovery cable channel in which the intrepid Mythbusters team takes on the chicken cannon. -- OJ III

ID Nov21 or 22 1971 S. Viet Naval A/C Loss? by old hoodoo
Does anyone have any information concerning any US naval aircraft losses on these days and the fate of the crew(s)? I'll explain more if I can pin one of these losses down. I am looking for just basic information on one rescue incident. The particular incident I am researching occurred in South...

first US navy kill? WWI by old hoodoo
I was reading where a US pilot shot down an Austrian fighter flying an Italian m.5 seaplane fighter. Was this our first navy kill?

F2A-1/B-239 in Pensacola by Old hoodoo
After much knashing of apphrehensive teeth by Brewster F2A fans, BW-372, a Brewster B-239 (US Navy F2A-1 equivalent) has found a home in the US at the National Naval Museum in Pensacola. The only "issue" for the museum, which sat in a freshwater lake for over 50 years, is that due to its amazingly...

f2A1/b-239 update pensacola by old hoodoo
Apparently a decision has been made to reassemble the aircraft to its just recovered state and do preservation work on items needing stabilization and to leave the current paint on the aircraft for the present (good decision). Will be interesting to see it all together as when originally photo'd...

IVAN--Pensacola NMNA survived (unconfirmed report) by old hoodoo
Being a relatively new building, and I think built with private funds to the newer building codes, the National Museum of Naval Aviation has initially been reported to have weathered the storm intact which is what was expected (with crossed fingers I presume) from such a structure. Only a one...

NAS Miami WWII question by old hoodoo
Anyone familiar with NAS Miami during WWII? I am trying to determine a naval location reference NAS Miami as "Pt. Affirm" I can't find it on the net. Not sure if it is merely a local naval aviation reference point, a swallowed up town, or a point of land. Surely there are still some naval...

pearl harbor, no naval air defense by old hoodoo
I just read that that the Navy took no responsibility for protecting the naval base and that this was an Army responsibility. The few fighter aircraft at the naval base were aircraft in transit or under repair and there were virtually no available fighter pilots. Does this seem ridiculous to anyone...

Boyington's natural metal corsair? by old hoodoo
I just heard a black sheep state on a history channel program that there was one paint stripped corsair (in which Boyington may have flown (in addition to other aircraft) in combat?). Upon a comment it might be too easy to see in the air, Boyington's response that it might attract more Japs to him...

1925-dirigble target towing by old hoodoo
I just read that the Shenadoah towed a target for the USS Texas anti-aircraft guns with success. The target was 50' long 10' in diameter and was peppered by the Texas at 3000 feet. An interesting use for the lighter-than air ship. AL

Curtiss Flying boat Russian 1915 by old hoodoo
I have found a reference to a photo that states it is a curtiss flying boat equipped with a colt machine gun, 1915. Curtiss delivered flying boats to Russia in this period and Russia was also purchasing colt mgs. Does anyone know of any pics with the colt machine guns placed on early curtiss...

F2A2-American Zero? by old hoodoo
I have been looking over the performance data on the A6M2. Although examination of the A6M2 showed that we could have built a fighter like the zero but sacrificed performance for pilot/plane protection overall performance considering all factors. The F2A3 was not, being built for extreme long...

me-208 by old hoodoo
Does anyone have any pics or descriptions of the correct paint scheme for a Me-208 (not 108 unless they had similar schemes) as used by the Germans during the war years? Its my understanding that some 200 of the tri gear 208's were used by the Germans during the war? The wing gear is very similar...
