Towing by Roger Fowler
I recently rode with a towpilot who leaned the engine aggresively after retarding throttle at the start of the descent. While he is probably correct that it slows the rate of cylinder cooling significantly, I had never seen it done before. Is anyone else using this procedure?

Tost brake bolt shears off by Jack Glendening[_2_]
I am wondering if others have experienced the shearing of a Tost brake bolt resulting in brake failure - I'm speaking about the bolt which extends from the hub and is secured to the aircraft frame (not the bolt which extends for the wire lever attachment). I experienced such a failure on my latest...

Trailer tire rims by Gary Carter
I have an older Cobra trailer (1980ish - aluminum) and need to find another tire rim (I had an axle mishap and lost one of my tire/rims). The rim is a 4 x 100 metric (four lug holes and 100 mm between each lug) and supports a 13 inch tire. Does anyone have a rim for sale or can suggest a source...

Time for Separate 18m Records? by Roy B.
Friends: I thought that it would be interesting to start a discussion on whether the FAI and different countries should begin to recognize 18 meters as a separate category for distance and speed records. The class has become very popular, even more popular than was the 15m class when those were ...

Bowlus & Nelson Bumble Bee powered glider questions by soon2bexpat
I have a 16mm home movie showing a test flight of the Bumble Bee at Rosamond Dry Lake in 1945. I need help with 2 things: 1) I would imagine that Bowlus and Nelson are part of this movie but I can't find a photograph of either of these guys so that I can ID them. Does anyone know where there is a...

News Flash: You don't need elevator control ! by nowhere
Yes, according to Peter Garrison's "Aftermath" column in the November issue of "Flying" you don't need to connect your elevator control! I quote: "the NTSB report does not comment on the fact that a disconnected elevator does not make an ASW-20, or for that matter any other airplane, unflyable. The...

Strobe light on glider by Jonathan St. Cloud
A while ago several people remarked that Schleicher gliders offer a strobe was an option. Below is an URL to a youtube video of such strobe. Typically the strobe is coupled with an unit from LxNav that allow the strobe to be on, only flash with Flarm warning, or...

Looking for Libelle information. by 914Driver
Hello all, New guy here. I recently bought a Schuemanized Libelle and would like more information on these ships. I heard there were only nine manufactured, but I can't find that in writing anywhere. Because the nose is closed up (CG tow hook now) air into the cabin is slight, I'm curious how...

Puchacz reviews by cuflyer
Hello All, I am looking for real world reviews of the Puchacz (or the newer Perkoz) in the club / instructional environment. How do they hold up to daily use/abuse? Maintenance issues? How are they for ab-initio? Truth to the spin-eager rep? Any bad habits?

Birds in the hangar by Ben Coleman
Our club is discussing what we can do to deter birds from perching in our hangar and messing up our aircraft. Can anyone recommend a technique? Are there any methods which have not worked? The birds are small, probably swallows. Thanks Ben

Motor Glider engines - Rotax 535 spares by Ian Strachan
I fly a Nimbus 4DM motor glider, owned by a syndicate that operates out of Lasham, UK. A breathtaking machine, particularly when I compare it to gliders I flew decades ago such as the Grunau, Olympia (Meise), and then the Skylark series. But I digress ... This post on the international soaring...

Max Weight of Non Lift Producing Components by [email protected]
In addition to max gross weight, some glider manuals specify a max weight for non lift producing components. But I haven't found much discussion of the significance of exceeding the max or information that would allow one to calculate the weight of non-lifting components (like a breakout showing...

LiFePO4 Batteries by vontresc
So I am in the market for a new battery for my Libelle. I was thinking it might be time to upgrade to a LiFePO4 battery. Any recommendations/reviews from the community? I've seen people using the K2 and Stark Power batteries. Any preference between the two? Thanks Peter

Gear Warning by Gordon Schubert
I had gotten an almost brand new (12 hrs) Genesis 2. My experience with retractable landing gear was somewhat limited. At the end of my sixth flight I crossed the field to check on traffic and turned into the pattern. I announced my downwind and started my landing checklist. Just as was about to...

How to suspend a glider? by [email protected]
Hi all, Has anyone out there ever suspended a glider in the air without resorting to the conventional method of airflow over the wings? I have an opportunity to hang both of my Grob 103's in two malls over the holiday season. I am pushing for having a Santa in the back and a Rudolf leaning forward...
