Can I fly the NY VFR corridor w/o a XPNDR? by Mike
Simple question. Can I fly the NY VFR corridor in a transponderless aircraft that meets the exception requirements of 91.215 (no electrical system)? It looks like the answer is yes, provided I stay low enough (below 500' as I turn the Lady). Any new TFR or other restrictions on this? Any good...

AOPA states that "most" pilots are incompetent by Skylune
From the AOPA intro to the Weather Wise Course: "Most pilots don't realize that low ceilings and restricted visibilites are aviation's most deadly killers. With a little knowledge..." LOL. But the course was fun to take. I liked the audio of the guy with the Texas drawl who had to land on a...

A hypothetical situation, and a doubt by [email protected]
This won't happen, yet... On takeoff, one of your engines sucks in a bird or simply fails, and you're left with just one turbine. You declare emergency, etc. but in returning for a landing, there occurs a situation during finals - you somehow botch up the approach or some unexpected weather is...

Carrying Skis in a Single... by EridanMan
Hey Guys, I'm in plane-search mode after recently passing my check flight. One of the number one uses I want for the aircraft is to be able to make VFR flights up to Tahoe in the winter for ski trips (hopefully regularly, as the weather permits). As such, I have a pretty basic question-

PDA: Which one and what software? by [email protected]
Hello, I am a private pilot aspiring to move up the rating and get my CFI. I am in the market for a PDA to help organize my life, dates, phone numbers, addresses, emails, and also double as a electronic flight computer and sort of a electronic flight bag type of thing. My laptop is a Powerbook...

Missing from the FAA database now by Chris Ehlbeck
My Dad went to show a friend of his the FAA database and that his son is a pilot. It didn't find me so he called me. I checked and low and behold it didn't find me. It now even asked me for a state or country to search! I had requested my address not be displayed very shortly after getting my...

Airbus to Expand Cockpit Automation by John
European jet maker Airbus is taking an unprecedented step to expand cockpit automation: onboard computers that will automatically maneuver jetliners to avoid midair collisions, without any pilot input. Known for its pioneering use of computers and software to push the automation envelope, this...

Two questions about the PIPER CUB by [email protected]
Howdy folks, I was browsing the web and came upon this odd photograph of the Piper Cub strung on wires above the ground. Apparently it was used to launch aircraft and catch them without landing/takeoff. Here's the pictu http://www.ww2incolor.com/gallery/us_navy/pipercub_brodie Anyone seen that...

A new first by Jay Honeck
So we're climbing out of Prairie du Chein, WI (KPDC) on a beautiful early fall afternoon. We've just been to the local riverboat's all-you-can-eat buffet, and Mary is flying as PIC with my 27-year old nephew in the right seat. I'm in the back seat with my brother-in-law, and we've just reclined...

Building a simulator by Ramapriya
Any idea how much it might cost to build a simulator at home - say of a 747? Also, how good is Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 for use on a desktop PC? What additional hardware would I require to act as a control column, rudder pedal, etc.? Inputs welcome, thank you. Ramapriya

Winter Flying by [email protected]
Since we are well into winter and snow and ice, how are you coping with it? What are you doing to pick out XC checkpoints now that the ground is covered with snow and everything looks different? How are you going to handle taxiing on slick or ice covered taxiways and runways? Have you ever...

"Interesting" wind yesterday by Jay Honeck
As many may know, we set records here in Iowa yesterday, hitting 73 degrees in Iowa City. It felt great! The winds in the afternoon started to kick up pretty good, as a cold front approached from the northwest. On our way back from brunch in Lone Rock, WI (where we ran into this group's own Jim...

Headwinds, always by Paul kgyy
I just returned from an 8-day tour of the midwest. This was a 6-leg circular route west to Des Moines from Chicago, then up to the Dakotas, back through Duluth, Green Bay. We mostly flew at 7000 ft. We had 20-30 knot headwinds on 5 of the 6 legs and never once a tailwind.

Why bother about light aircraft noise. by [email protected]
I has looking at a TV show about traffic violations including the odd high speed chases. Part of the show was about the technical integerty of vehicles being pulled over. One of the things the police looked at was the sound level of cars and motorcycles, especially the ones with the sporty...

spoilers vs. ailerons by [email protected]
There are two old Senecas at my airport with the Robertson STOL mod - full span flaps w/spoilers in place of conventional ailerons. I've seen one of them take off with a brutally short roll, and it went up as if on an escalator. My question is, how would one of these land in a stiff x-wind? Is the...

Cessna developing new LSA by Kingfish
Cessna is working on a LSA to be unveiled at Oshkosh this year. It kinda sounds like a modern 152. If this enters production it would help legitimize the LSA segment (not that it needed it). Between this plane and the "Cirrus Killer" and a new jet sized below the Mustang, the Cessna product...
