TFR Bust.. by
Dan
In reading the following account of a pilot's TFR bust near
Washington, it struck me as concerning that briefings cannot be
obtained under the Freedom of Information Act now that FSS has been
privatized. Has anyone else run into this issue?

Historic FARs by
Dan
Greetings Gentlemen,
I am looking for a copy of FAR Part 61.109(A) (Aeronautical Experience)
that was current in June 1970 when I got my private pilot ticket. I
don't need all of 61.109, just part A which is Private Single Engine
Land.
FAA.gov has some Historical FARs but not part 61.
I called...

What to get as a gift for a now-retired ATCO? by
Dan Foster
A colleague at work and personal friend's dad is a recently retired ATCO
officer whom has worked at EGLL / LHR for about 30 years.
The chap has done much for me and for many others, so I wanted to send a
thank-you gift that tied in to aviation and perhaps ATC operation.
I know what kind of gifts...

Misrepresenting on medical applications by
Dan Foster
There was a thread recently where this was briefly discussed, though I
can't seem to quite find it now.
On AOPA's web site, they talk a bit about how the feds do try to levy
stiff penalties on people whom intentionally misrepresents facts on the
medical, if they're caught.
(And they indicate that...

Another ADIZ violation? by
Dan Foster
While on the topic of ADIZ violations, just noticed from AOPA's web site
that the infamous ADIZ bust last year led to an interview with the two
pilots involved once dust had settled down.
Must've been hard for them to do that interview, especially with such a
highly watched organization like AOPA,...

New fix names in honor of AOPA's President by
Dan Foster
Neat -- the AOPA web site indicates that a) Phil Boyer has been at the
helm for 15 years as of two days ago, and b) new fix names in his honor
for the June publication of updated terminal procedure charts.
RNAV (GPS) RWY 5 approach for FDK will have new names for fixes: PHILB,
DEFND, and GEEAY....

Plane crashed -- what happened? by
Dan Foster
A good friend is grieving the sudden loss of another friend from a plane
crash about a week ago. Neither the pilot nor the sole passenger survived.
With very little information to go on with... I'm wondering what could
have had been the possible factors into such an accident.
I am sure the NTSB...

Rentals at BUR by
Dan Katz
I used to fly out of BUR, and when they closed Pilots Co-op (became
Burbank Aviators), that was the virtual end of rentals at BUR. I moved
over to VNY and rent out of Blue Skies - of course, there are a lot of
rental facilities at VNY. Shame though, since BUR is a great airport
to fly in and out...

OSH observation by
Dan Luke
Departing OSH Wednesday morning, the departure wait for light GA peons got
pretty long. I was interested to hear the ever-more-urgent pleas from a
Cirrus flight of four to speed things up because their engines were
over-heating as they sat idling in line.
Didn't hear anything like that from...

Prop position by
Dan Luke
I'm talking about where the prop stops when I shut down the engine. What
would cause a 2-blade, constant speed prop on a Lyc. O-360 to suddenly begin
stopping in a different position than it had every time for the last 3
years?
My prop has always stopped parallel to the pavement until last night,...

WxWorx gets a workout by

Yesterday was one of those sopping wet, unstable Gulf Coast spring days
and I needed to get an Angel Flight couple from Mobile to Jennings, LA
(3R7, west of Lafayette) in the afternoon. By the time we were ready to
leave BFM at noon, the NEXRAD on our route looked like a cheap Hawaiian
luau shirt...

Trip to Dallas II by

Not a big deal; IFR to DAL, VFR back to BFM, no sweat, but I want to
give another plug to Regal Aviation at Love Field.
Once again, they treated me like I had driven up in a Gulfstream instead
of a somewhat scroungy looking Cutlass RG. Rent car delivered right to
the airplane, free bottled water...

An aircraft departing a class D airport next to class C airspace
requests VFR flight following and is assigned a squawk code. The
aircraft is cleared for takeoff and instructed to fly runway heading at

contact Approach but is...

The best new thing I saw at OSH... by
Dan Luke
....was Van's new, four-place RV-10. They had a cockpit mockup outside the
tent for the tirekickers to sit in. The roominess is truly impressive,
especially the rear seats which hold two six-footers in comfort. Van is
projecting an 1100 lb. useful load for the airplane if you build it...
