R-5107A and R-5103A transit by
Mike Noel
Does anyone know how likely it is to get permission to fly through these
two restricted areas? If permission is scarce, I guess I'll have to take
the scenic route through El Paso.

SIFL Tax question for small business owners by
Dave
I'm ready to buy and have finally found good prospects not too far
from me. I'm a small business owner. I've spoken to my accountant
about the tax advantages. He's not a pilot but anything that saves
money is good news to him. I have several clients that are far enough
away to make flying...

expense analysis by

I did some analysis of the data I keep (which on the airplane is EVERYTHING)
and thought the readers here might find some of it interesting.
I added up everything I have EVER spent on this 1967 C-172H (acquisition,
upgrades, annuals, fuel, insurance, repairs, parking, new headsets and GPS,

Lightspeed Comes Through! by
Jay Honeck
As many of you know, while at OSH 2003 I had one of those inadvertent
"once-in-a-lifetime" conversations with the president of Lightspeed
Aviation. The story goes as follows:
I've had three pair of LightSpeed headset -- two 15s and a 20XL -- that I
have purchased over the last four years. The...

Overly restrictive business flying requirements. by
Wily Wapiti
Hello.
I thought I'd bounce these off the group and see what people
think. These are the UniRegs at the University of Wyoming for flying
your own or rented plane on University business. I feel, as a
low-time private pilot that they are overly restrictive, but I thought
I'd see what the sage...

Transponder/Encoder troubleshooting by

Hey all. Any avionics advice for troubleshooting my latest
gremlin? It's a Narco AR-850 altitude encoder connected vi 1N4007 diodes

is, once in awhile the ModeC doesn't work (center says only
ModeA). Every once in awhile,...

Follow up on fuel drains by
Mike Noel
The Curtis valve fuel drains from Aircraft Spruce were about $10 each
including shipping, they are TSO'ed and come with some kind of sealant at
the base of the thread grooves. They also still have 'O' rings, but the
manufacturer says to replace the entire valve and not to 'overhaul' the
valve. ...

New owner glitches on the 175B ( Why didn't they see them?) by
Justin Case
Welcome to airplane ownership. I strongly suggest you join the type
club before turning any blank checks over to your mechanic. What you
are seeing may be an easy fix or a common problem that many have seen
before.

Nose wheel shimmy by

I read an interesting thread where someone pointed out that all shimmy
preventitive devices are designed to stop something that has already started,
and that wheel balancing may stop a shimmy from ever starting. Makes sense, but
my question is; What, if any, is the normal method of balancing...

EGT Problem by
Dennis O'Connor
Two possible causes, Newps...
One is a broken wire(s) going to the instrument panel where moving the wire
around to work on the lugs causes the broken ends to abrade and make better
contact for a while, and then they reoxidize... This is high on my
suspicion list since it is the same two wire...

When I owned a Cessna 170, the file clerk said it was worth $80,000, and
my tax was $2000/yr. There has to be some way to defeat this ridiculous
tax.

I am a low time pilot 100 hours who has time on 150's 172 (new and

generally improve our flying skills. One day or aim is a float plane
