Birds at Altitude by
Judah
What's the highest altitude that you ever saw a bird swoop past your plane?
The other day I was flying at 5000' MSL, over land that was mostly about
1000' (so 4000' AGL) and saw a flock of birds, hawks of some sort I think,
one of which came close enough to make me quite nervous (although from...

ATP wants a single engine add on by
Emily
And for some reason he's picked me for the honor of training him.
But I'm a little confused on one thing. He claims to have a
commercial-multi, limited to centerline thrust, and an ATP multi,
unrestricted, with 737 and 757/767 type ratings. I wasn't aware that
you could have both those...

visual contact with other traffic by
Marc Adler
Listening to http://audio.liveatc.net:8012/kjfk_app_final , I hear a
lot of instructions from the tower to follow other traffic, but the
pilots don't always know what aircraft they're following. It sounds
like the tower expects them to be able to recognize an airplane (type,
airline, etc.) from two...

Rogue's Gallery Almost Got Me in Trouble by
Mike Adams
We had an incident a few days ago at my home airport with a couple in a Cessna 182 that never showed
up after a local flight. It still hasn't been determined whether the flight ran into difficulty or where they
went. The story was on the news last night and as we're watching the TV coverage, my...

Idiotic News Reporters by
Ron Snipes
After hearing all the speculation on the news today regarding the aircraft
that hit the building in NY, I was watching the press conference Mayor
Bloomburg was doing around 5:30pm. Some female reporter asked if the Flight
Data Recorder had been found yet? (I'm not bashing female...

Contra-rotating engine revisited by
Chris W
The previous post on this topic got me wondering. Just how different
would the two engines need to be? I'm no expert, but it seems to me
cam shaft(s), magnetos, and prop are the parts that would be different
from one side to the other. I almost forgot, reverse the polarity on
the starter...

Need some advice for new pilot in training by
Bubba
Hello everyone,
I'm sure you probably read at least 50 "newbie" messages a week and I
apologize in advance for this one. But as the subject reads, I'm a new
pilot in training. I've only been flying for about a month now, but I
only fly once a week, so really, I've only been up four times now. ...

plane crashed on takeoff attempt after emergency landing by
Toks Desalu
http://www.wafb.com/Global/story.asp?S=4038264
I found this link in alt.binaries.multimedia.aviation. I thought you guys
should see this. After seeing this clip, I wonder why the pilot would begin
a takeoff rollout with all the vehicles on the side of road. The risk factor
would cut down...

New fix names in honor of AOPA's President by
Dan Foster
Neat -- the AOPA web site indicates that a) Phil Boyer has been at the
helm for 15 years as of two days ago, and b) new fix names in his honor
for the June publication of updated terminal procedure charts.
RNAV (GPS) RWY 5 approach for FDK will have new names for fixes: PHILB,
DEFND, and GEEAY....

Last week I announced a rec.aviation contest to "Name Our New Aviation Theme

City, IA, with the winner earning a free night in "their" suite. To my
amazement, we received over 100 suggested names!

Haven't flown in a long while... by
Flyingmonk
I haven't flown in a long while and I'm avoiding the "Pilot
withdrawl..." thread. I've got to get my medical class III done before
Feb 15, that's when I'm turning 40 so it will last for 3 years.
Now, I've been reading about all of these recent crashes.
Man! I'm not sure if I'm upto going back up...

Amateur night at the field by
Viperdoc
Arrived at around 2200 last night IFR at our local field, and heard a pilot
doing position reports on the CTAF. I spotted the traffic (night touch and
goes), and also announced. As I established on final, she announced a full
stop, and then proceeded to land and taxi the whole length of the mile...

Locate airports by radius from a given airport by
Matt Whiting
Does anyone know of a good way to locate airports that are 200 miles or
more from a given airport? I realize a large planning chart with a
circle drawn would be easy, but I don't have one of those handy. I need
to plan a 200 mile cross country for my commercial day/night long cross
country and...

Holds on autopilot? by
Mxsmanic
In real life, do most pilots equipped with autopilots use them to fly
holds (i.e., by using the HDG function of the autopilot, and possibly
altitude holds or autothrottle if available), or do they fly the plane
by hand through the holds?
When you are tested on your ability to fly holds, do you...
