Garmin 496 Training by
John Theune

I was thinking of upgrading my 396 to the 496 and bought VFlite's
Interactive Guide to see the new features in action. It was very helpful,
but I just don't think there are enough new features (taxi guidance, AOPA
database, etc.) to justify the price tag.
I am offering...

A strange richness... by
Jay Honeck
On our flight to Nevada, I was impressed with the smoothness and
car-like predictability of Jim Burns' start-up technique with his
Lycoming IO-540s. Jim had a way to start them that I'd not seen
demonstrated before, which I will describe he

Digital OAT by
Jim Burns
Does anybody in the group have a digital OAT indicator?
We've just put a new single piece windshield in our plane and moved the
standard OAT gauge to the pilot's side window. Now we've decided to put all
new 1/4" side windows in and rather than drilling a hole through a brand new
window, I'd like...

First Annual Fun - Day 2 by
Jon Kraus
No new gotcha's today... Maybe the exhaust is the biggy and will stay
that way. The A & P said except for the exhaust the Mooney is pretty
clean and passing the inspections with no issues. All the control
surface, landing gear, electrical inspections are pretty much complete.
All the inspections...

Depreciating aircraft parts, dealing with taxes, etc. by
Andrew Gideon
Most owners, I assume, have corporations which do the actual owning and
which provide a liability firewall. But how are taxes managed?
The issue I think I'm facing is we pay money into the corporation against
future events like overhaul, repainting, etc. These monies add up. But
since this is...

Temporarily removing fuel and replacing it into the same aircraft by
B A R R Y[_2_]
Does anyone know of a FAR that prohibits removing fuel, avgas in this
case, and then putting it back into the same plane? The plane is flown
for part 91 service only.
Examples:
1.) The plane is 50 pounds overweight for conditions. 10 gallons is
siphoned out into a clean, single-purpose,...

Starter question by
A Lieberma
Went flying today. Go to crank the engine for start, nothing. Turn the
key, got like a jiggle of the prop. Turn all electrical things off,
figuring the battery drained, and then started just the alt and bat, same
thing, jiggle of the prop. Tried once more, and got the prop to turn and
fired...

Finally: The right-sized Thielert by
Thomas Borchert
Thielert has announced a diesel engine in the 230-HP-range, covering
the gap between the existing 135- and 350-HP models. Great news, IMHO,
since this is the kind of power many of the planes we fly need. First
target for certification seems to be the 182. Time frame is 2007. Nice!

Whats the deal with counter-rotating props? by
Dico
Hello,
We're looking into a twin and the Twin Comanche is on our list. I know
that the later models have the counter rotating props -- although i
don't know too much about what this means, other than its "better".
We fly a mooney now and thus I don't worry about the prop -- as long as
it keeps...

One step closer to owning an Arrow by

My partners and I have a verbal offer on a '70 Arrow. We're working on
getting it down in writing but, so far, things look pretty good.
Biggest issue right now is getting the pre-buy scheduled and having SB
1006, the wing spar corrosion service bulletin, performed.
I'm planning to fly back to...

2. Water cooling for dependable cabin heat?

4. Automatic timing control?
