GNS 430W vs GNS 480 by
Ron Gordon
I'm going to add either the GNS 430W or GNS 480 to a Beach Bonanza and am
wondering if any of you who fly with these GPS units have a recommendation?
I'd like a very capable IFR GPS with integrated NAV/COM abilities, which
I'll couple to my S-TEC 50 Autopilot with GPSS. Both the 430W and 480 are...

Jep p or NACO Charts? by
Judah
Last week I finally got checked out in the club's Arrow.
During the training, the instructor noticed that I was using the NACO
charts and plates.
He uses the Jeppeson stuff and excitedly indicated that it is far superior
to the NACO charts. He gave me a few reasons, but when I looked at it...

Standby Vacuum? by
Mitty
Our club is looking at upgrading a couple of airplanes to Garmin 430s, etc.
It seems to me that standby vacuum would be a good thing to add, too.
1) Good idea? Do these systems really work?
2) Recommendations on type/brand/model?
TIA

GNS430 on the Airway by
[email protected]
Hello,
I was on the ground at an uncontrolled field. I got a clearance to
"On departure fly runway heading Radar Vectors xyz VOR Victor xxx abc
VOR"
Before leaving, I programmed the entire route into the GNS430. Since
it doesn't have airways, I "synthesized" them by just putting in the
VORs and...

ADF and GPS equip % by
Julian Scarfe
Can anyone point me to data regarding the proportions of the US GA
IFR-capable fleet that have:
A Both an ADF and an approach-approved GPS
B An ADF but no approach-approved GPS
C An approach-approved GPS but no ADF
D Neither
?
Either piece of equipment counts only if it is serviceable.

Mode S transponder display to ATC? by
paul kgyy
Is it normal practice for a Mode S transponder to display the aircraft
tail number to ATC?
I ask because I thought it did, but recently on flight following the
controller seemed to have difficulty getting my number correct over
the radio.

Procedure Turn by
Bravo8500
I'm pretty sure this question has been asked, but I can't seem to find
it. My question deals with a typical approach with a procedure turn
before the FAF, could be an NDB, VOR, GPS, etc. I know what the
purposes are. 1) Provide course reversal and 2) allow altitude loss
from the arrival altitude to...

What was controller implying?? by
Bill J
Yesterday I was on an IFR flight about 50 miles from destination. The
area was getting covered with TS, including my alternate 20 miles futher
west. Home base was 150 mi to the east. I realized I might have to
reverse course to escape, but did not have enough fuel to get home for sure.
So, the...

Flying Thru Congested Areas by
O. Sami Saydjari
I am planning a long cross country where I am trying to minmiize the
time the trip will take (while, of course, trying to be as safe as
possible). The shortest route would take me straight over the top of
Detroit and Clevland and Pittsburg (I am flying from Central Wisconsin
to Washington D.C. to...

If you feel the price is ridiculous then apparently the data has limited
or no value to you.

Contact Approach -- WX reporting by
[email protected]
It was briefly mentioned in one of the longer threads that a contact
approach requires 1 sm reported ground visibility. It reminded me that
I had flown a contact approach some 8 months ago to an airport about 15
minutes after the tower had closed (there is no automated weather
available) and...

Best Single Pilot IFR Plane by
Charles Talleyrand
There must be people on the newsgroup that fly single pilot
IFR on a regular basis. These people have a schedule to make
and would rather not miss that schedule unless necessary. These people
don't have the need to carry many passengers, but just themselves.
My question is for these people...

A disturbing statistic by
Dane Spearing
I've had many non-pilot friends and co-workers ask, "Is flying a small plane
more or less dangerous than driving a car?", to which my response has always
been "It depends on who is piloting the plane." However, in order to get
a firmer answer from a statistical standpoint on this question, I...

Flight Following question by
Jim Carter
So far, every time I come out of ROG and request flight following to it
doesn't matter where, I get a discrete squawk that allows departure to
hand me off to Memphis Center, or Dallas, or Kansas City. Coming out of
LIT however I've never been given anything except a local code and then
about 15...

OK, I know I said I would not get to fly this plane until tomorrow, but it
arrived early and so I took a flight. This is a new turbocharged Cessna

For those that have not seen the 182T (either turbo or normal, introduced
last year), you might be a little startled the first time you take a...

Did I violate an FAR? by
Anonymous coward #673
The other day I was under the hood with a safety pilot, but I was not
IFR current. I requested a "practice approach in VFR conditions" and
was cleared for an actual approach. I advised ATC that I just wanted a
practice approach and they said, "We have to put you in the system for
." So I...

When does IFR begin in VFR? by
Wizard of Draws
I took a short XC today after a layoff of a few months due to real life
constraints and weather. I filed IFR even though it was VFR because I wanted
to get back into the groove of communicating with ATC.
I filed for 5000 going east. On the ground, they told me it would be faster
if I took off VFR...

Practice IMC in real IMC by
gregscheetah
Hello,
I want to practice maneuvers, descending turns and basic manual
maneuvering in IMC conditions. Is it possible to get ATC to assign you
a 'practice area' in real IMC environment? Say a block of airspace
like they do for aerobatics? Of course I would first do this with a
CFII.
Previous all...
