Wind deflectors on balloon? by Roy Smith
Since a balloon is drifting with the surrounding airmass, there should be no relative wind. So, what are the "wind deflectors" shown in the following diagram all about? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/spl/hi/sci_nat/03/ballooning/html/platform ..stm

Balloon-assisted jumping by JumpingMan
Some friends of mine are obsessed with the idea of buying weather balloons, filling them with helium, attaching them to a harness (with probably about -3 to -5 lbs of net lift) and jumping up into the air. If anyone has info on both the feasibility (with implicit danger) and cost of such an...

Standard Weather Briefing efficiency by Ben Hallert
Hi guys, Got a strange question for you. When I flew in Los Angeles, I'd call 800-WX-BRIEF, get connected to the local FSS and the call would go like this. Him: "Hawthorne flight service." Me: "I'd like a standard weather briefing." Him: "Go ahead." At this point, I'd just list off all the data....

I read in a recent Av Leak that the stuff fire-bombers drop is a mixture of phosphate fertilizer and water. Can anyone tell me how the phosphate functions as a fire retardant? Is it ammonium phosphate, sodium phosphate, or what? Thanks. vince norris
