Alternate airports by
Mike W.
OK I picked this topic after reading through the 'flying to hamvention''
thread. Being a non-instrument rated private pilot, not sure what
constitutes a 'legal' alternate airport. If VFR, weather minimums must be
met just to get there. If IFR, I assume there is visibility minimum
(decision height?)...

Alternate static on "big iron"? by
Marc Lattoni
Last night on Discovery Channel there was a story of a Peruvian 757 that
went down because the two static ports had been taped over for cleaning and
not removed. As you might imagine, the airspeed indicator and altimeter gave
erroneous readings and fed the onboard computers erroneous data; after...

Altimeter 3066 by
M
A very high pressure settled in Pacific NW:
KPSC 020453Z 31006KT 6SM BR BKN007 BKN075 M07/M08 A3066 RMK AO2
SLP389 T10671078
That's the highest that I've ever remember seeing.
I always thought that the NW seems to have larger pressure swings
(probably more so in Alaska). We can go from 2960...

Altimeter Calibration Height by
TheSmokingGnu
Here's one that may seem silly: to what height, precisely, is an
altimeter calibrated to?
The bottom of the landing gear? The height of the static port? the chord
line of the fuselage? In a Cessna, the difference between these is
minimal, but on an airliner, you're talking about a possible +/-...

Altimeter Correction Height - Some Answer(s) by
Kev
I did some more research and found interesting tidbits about altimeter
calibrations. References at end.
As mentioned before, the altimeter is tested for calibration,
friction, case leak, and hysteresis as per F.A.R. 43 appendix E
paragraph (b). The static system is tested for leaks as per F.A.R....

Altimeter experience by
HankC
Last weekend I had an interesting experience at a samll airport...
I was inbound, 15 miles out and above pattern altitude and descending.
I dialed the field to get runway in use and wind. He also gave me
altimeter, which I started to dial in, and in and in...
I slowly realized this was not right...

Altimeter pilot watch? by
es330td
The other day I saw a watch advertised as a watch for pilots that
includes an altimeter. While I have seen these before for mountain
climbers this is the first I have seen targeted at pilots. My first
question in seeing it was "Where is the Kollsman window?" I tried to
find more data online but...

Altimeter Question by
terry
I am confused by this practice commercial nav question. ( at least I
am confused by the answer in the book which was b. but I think both a
and c are correct), but I appreciate some other opinions.
Day 1 Altimeter reads elevation of 1390 feet with 1013 HPa set on
subscale

Altimeter setting != Sea Level Pressure - Why? by
JT Wright
I have a question regarding the relationship between an altimeter
setting and sea level pressure.
Here is the current METAR for Abilene Regional Airport, Texas:
KABI 280152Z 17014KT 10SM CLR 19/16 A2987 RMK AO2 SLP098
T01940161
As you can see, the altimeter setting is 29.87" and the Sea...

Altimeters and air pressure variation by
jharper aaatttt cisco dddooottt com
At sea level, the change in atmospheric pressure with altitude is
close to 1"Hg/1000'. Logically, this would mean that the air
pressure would drop to zero somewhere not much above 30000'. It
doesn't, because as the density drops the variation with
altitude also changes.
Which brings to mind the...

Altitude versus which? Mag or ground track? by
Casey Wilson
Here's the real life scenario: The bearing (GPS track ) from Mojave
(KMHV) to Inyokern (KIYK) California is 006 Mag up along the east face of
the Sierra Nevada. Heading home the other day in VMC, the airmass spilling
off the Sierra was giving me a healthy quartering tail wind from the left

Alton Bay (NH) Ice Port Flyin by

Ever landed on a frozen lake? It's quite fun!
Every year, Alton bay, NH Plows the snow off Lake Winnepesaukee to make a
runway at it's seaport base (B18), which is tens of inches thick this time
of year.
The Aviation assoc. of NH sponsors a fly in event, to make the trip up to

Aluminum instrument panel finish? by
Richard Riley
I've just finished machining my instrument panel. It is (I say with
no small pride) nice. Milled out of 2024T3 3" thick, reduced to .120
with .120 webs between each instrument and around the perimeter.
Now the question is: how should it be finished? Polished? Engine
turned? Anodized? Clear...

Always check your flight controls BEFORE starting your engine by

I dutifully followed the checklist, which called for checking flight
controls free and correct after starting the engine. After fifteen
years of flying never having had any problems with the flight controls,
today I was in the runup area and found that my right rudder pedal
didn't have full...

Am I an idiot? Low experience; high performance by
[email protected]
I am contemplating buying an airplane mostly for business trips, but I
know a 172 or something like that will not stand the test of time
since I frequently travel to Wichita and the headwinds are brutal
sometimes.
I have been thinking about a Mooney or Bonanza but I wonder if I am
setting myself...
