"Airport Hot Spot" Superscript Numbers by
blackboxman
I just noticed something new on the airport diagram for Paine Field:
airport hot spots. Anybody know what the superscript number after
each "HOT" designator is for? Thanks.

PC/PDA based approach plates by
Nathan Young
I use a tablet PC for XM Weather in flight, and figured I should add
approach plates... What vendors are available? Seattle Avionics
appears to have a good deal (~$100) with endless free plate updates.
So, I am looking for feedback on Seattle Avionics SmartPlates. Also,
looking for generic...

Standard Instrument Procedures...published in text form? by
Mark Astley
All,
I was once told that instrument procedures (i.e. approaches) are published
in text form, and then rendered into NOS charts (and a similar process for
Jeppesen).
1) Is this true?
2) If so, is this "raw" data available to the public somewhere? I'm looking
for something similar to the ATA-100...

XM Wx Garmin 430/430W with Garmin GDL-69? by
[email protected]
I recently swapped my 430 for a 430W. Is anyone using XM weather from
a GDL-69 on either a 430 or 430W? How do you find it on that
small display? What about getting METARs, for example -
is there too much button pushing, or not so bad? Would you make the
same purchase decision again or put the...

Full deflection = missed approach ??? by
pgbnh
It is common wisdom, and often common sense, that if a full deflection of a
CDI (or GS) is experienced, a missed approach is to be flown. But a lot of
people seem to think that it is REQUIRED. I have had a CFII tell me it is
required. But I can not find anything in FAR or AIM that states such...

I don't know how to flight plan any more by
Paul Tomblin
I'm flying to Pittsburgh this weekend, and as usual I'm going to KAGC
(Allegheny County). But for a change, instead of taking the club's Lance
I'm going to be taking the Dakota - and unlike the Lance, the Dakota has a
Garmin 530W in it. Now normally, I'd pull out the route I have on my PDA
in...

Time to medical help by
Hilton
Hi,
I have a question from a friend. Her daughters have nut allergies. She
wants to know how long it takes from cruise (41K?) to a gate from the time
they notify the crew of a medical emergency (e.g. anaphylactic shock).
Obviously it depends on their proximity to a suitable airport, but I'd...

Random Holding in IMC with ATC COMS- Video

Ceilings too high for approaches so I decided maintaining IMC
proficiency would be more important.
Seem like the controller was having a tough day. Note what happened
to 21 Alpha on his approaches as well as...

RAIM? by
Roy Smith
I've been doing most of my GPS flying with a CNX-80, which doesn't seem
to suffer from loss of RAIM. Last night I was flying with a GX-60, and
got a RAIM warning when commencing an approach.
The GX-60 manual isn't real illuminating on what you're supposed to do
at this point. Presumably,...

Minimum rate of climb or descent by
Aaron Kahn
What type of checkride was it? I would have asked the inspector to identify
the regulation that was infracted, or identify how the action compromised
safety.
It's true the controllers have expectations (as mentioned by Joe) but I
don't think that in and of itself constitutes a bust. But, then...

Grounded! by

For those who managed to escape all notice that the paper FAA
certificates were being turned over to plastic cards, as publicized for
the last two years: your paper flying license is now kindling,
as from midnight last night!

2 pilot/small airplane CRM by
Mitty
Can anyone point me to web or print resources with discussion of how to
best utilize two pilots in small airplanes? Who does what, etc. I have
found lots of airline-level material but really nothing that relates to
flying light singles. Or maybe someone who regularly flies with a pilot
spouse? ...

CH Product Yoke with IP Trainer 6.5 by
Sanjay Kumar
Folks !
I am planning to start my IFR training and wanted to get
a good Yoke + Trainer software. I got CH Yoke USB and downloaded
IP Trainer 6.5 which supports the USB Yoke. Unfortunately
in my demo runs I find the Software to be too senstive to Yoke
pitch - its always in a dive or a climb making...

CFII signoff needed, Dallas by
RM
I'm considering taking one of the intensive instrument rating courses,
most of which have a prerequisite of having completed the knowledge exam.
Accordingly, I've been working on that on my own.
Is there a CFII around who is willing to give me an endorsement to take
the test, preferably just on my...

Finding IAPs by TYPE? by
[email protected]
Hello all... I was looking through the online instrument procedures, trying to
find a VOR/DME RNAV approach to do the flight test portion of my KNS-80 IFR
certification. They aren't that prevalent, and I'm in Virginia, but basically equally
close to WV, KY, TN, and NC, which spans a number of sets...

Who's Boss? by

I'm flying into my home base KHKS at night in a single engine airplane. At
no point have I been outside of glide range to an airport. I am VFR shooting
a practice full approach in Class C airspace going into a Class D airport.
The controller wants me to descend to 2,000 feet five miles before...
