Structure of AD Numbers by
O. Sami Saydjari
Do Airworthiness Directive Numbers have any meaning and structure? For
example, AD 82-27-3. Does one part mean year issued? Another refer to
type equipment effected? Another, perhaps a serial number of the AD
itself? Just Curious.

transponder repair by
[email protected]
I have a Narco AT50A transponder that is not working right. Since I
don't fly IFR, I'm thinking I'll just get it repaired and not upgrade
to an expensive unit with a more modern design (such as Garmin GTX
327). It seems that if the repair is cheaper than buying a used
yellow-tagged newer model, I'm...

Lycoming Engine Parts list - Where to find? by
zatatime
I've heard that there is a way to get the "as shipped" parts list off
the web (or somewhere other than Lycoming). I am looking to get the
list of parts contained within my engine when it left Lycoming's
factory.
Does anyone know how to get this, or do I need to work with Lycoming
directly?
TIA...

Garmin 430 Reception by
Jon Kraus
Our "new" '79 M20J came with a 2 year old Garmin 430 GPS and Garmin 340
audio panel. The backup radio is an ancient King 170B. I must say that
the reception on the Garmin sucks compared to the 170B. Am I doing
something wrong or is this just something I have to live with? To me for
10 grand the...

Engine preheater on ebay?? by
skym
There's a portable engine preheater on ebay motors for $129. It looks
like an ok unit but I'm asking for any of the collective wisdom on pros
or cons of a unit like this. There's also one on Sportys for $399.
Any opinions on either or a comparison?

KIDNAPPED by
Charles Douglas Wehner
Millions already know that Britain is in the hands of terrorists who
respect no law.
Britain invaded Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. In the latter case, it
did so in violation of a United Nations resolution, no less. The
Secretary General of the UN declared the invasion "illegal".
In the face of...

camcorder recording Cessna intercom audio question by
Marty from Sunny Florida
Help!
I tried recording the Nav/Com audio to my Sony camcorder in a c172. The gain
is so high it just sounds like saturated noise. I basically wired from the
co-pilot's headset jack a cable to the sony 'mic in' jack. Has anyone here
successfully recorded a flight with clean audio, and if so, how...

Tail Wheel Training by

Could someone give a brief outline of what is involved in getting a
tail wheel endorsement.
I'm interested in upgrading my skills and would like to know what type
of training is involved. I suspect its mostly landing and taxing.
Also how long did it take to master the tail wheel...

Removeable tie down stakes - recommendations by

Thanks for all the feedback to my 6/20 post where I asked for recommendations for portable tiedown stakes.
I decided to buy "The Claw" from Hunting Solutions in Pearl MS.681-932-5832. The set received a good review in the latest issue of Aviation Consumer. It seemed to address most of the...

Seat belt tags by
Stephen Stilkey
Just finished the annual inspection on my 1963 172 this afternoon. It was
the first time I had used this A+P to inspect my plane. I assisted and
things went smoothly. It's interesting that a "new" set of eyes can see
things that have been overlooked in the past. Anyway, the seat belts no
longer...

Tanis heaters by
cpw
I live in northern lower Michigan where we have real winters some years
(not this one yet). My partner and I own a 2000 Cessna 182. We are
currently debating the proper use of the Tanis engine heater. It has
been our practice in the past to plug the heater in after a flight and
leave it plugged...

New York State Sales Tax (Aircraft) Info by
James Keane
All,
I am about to purchase an aircraft that currently resides in CA. I am
planning to fly it back to NY and register it in New York. I
understand that there is a 4% sales tax on aircraft registered in New
York, due at the time of purchase.
Is anyone aware of any interesting loopholes to this...
