Diesel aircraft engines and are the light jets pushing out the twins? by [email protected]
In rec.aviation.owning R. David Steele /omega wrote: What has happened to the development of the diesel aircraft engines? As far as I have seen, only Diamond has a production aircraft with diesel engines (they flew one across the Atlantic, with 5.76 gph). See...

CTB - LWS : Plane for the mission? Pilot for the plane? by scronje
Hi Folks I am a relatively low hour PP-ASEL(about 90 PIC, half in C-177 / 152, the rest in Challenger AUL and gliders, total time, including dual = 160 hours). I have not been flying for several years, but am in the process of regaining my certification. As the only way for me to be able to fly...

JPI Engine Data Analysis Questions by Jay Honeck
I've had the EDM-700 in my panel since 2002. I was able to download the engine data once, way back when the unit was new, but then my old laptop's battery died, and I never could remember to bring it (or its power cord) to the hangar. And, quite frankly, IMHO the saved data was presented in a...

Garmin SL30 COMM problem? by No Spam
I was pulling the avionics boxes to verify serial numbers and now I've got a problem with my SL30. At first, it was dead so I re-racked it. That got it to power up, but now I can't transmit or received on it. The NAV side works fine, but the data to the external OBS may be screwed up. What have...

Philosophical question on owning & IFR rating by TTA Cherokee Driver
I'm a 160-hour PPL and a club member. My club is great and economical, but availability and flexibility are becoming big drawbacks, so I'm toying with the idea of buying a plane. It's hard to justify on strictly financial terms because the club is such a good deal, but how many times can you...

Ext antenna connection for handheld radio by Ray Andraka
This is one for Jim Weir I guess... I had one of the Icom antenna switchboxes in my airplane until this week when I needed the panel space to let my handheld use the external antenna. I never really cared for that set-up, it appears it just uses a 1/8 inch phone jack with the switch in it to...

Avgas Coming Down? by Jon Kraus
Here in Indianapolis I have seen Mogas go down from $3.20 a gallon to $2.50 and it appears that it will keep on dropping. On the other hand at my home base I just filled up for a trip and still are paying $4.50 a gallon. Has anyone noticed if Avgas is coming down too? Maybe it has to do with...

I was passenger on a $100 hamburger run. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBl3rbiwpTA Note, pilot is fresh on getting her VFR ticket and wanted to get some ground ops experience so she asked me to come along. She also thought it would be cool to capture her comms with ATC so I brought the recorder...

Blow out static port by [email protected]
Hi group, There are larve in my static ports again. The problem is that I do not have compressed air to blow them out. I was thinking about using CO2 cartridges like they use for emergency tire repairs. Or maybe a bicycle pump will do the job. My concern is the max pressure I can use before I...

Aircraft choice... by Robert Barker
Our club is getting ready to purchase another airplane. To keep insurance costs low, we're leaning strongly towards fixed gear. But if we want higher performance than we get from our 172s and our DA40 (hoping for 150kts or better), it seems we're limited to 182's, Cirrus, and Columbia. The...

Wierd vibration -- Prop or engine, balance or not??? by Chuck
Hi guys & gals, I purchased an older Cherokee 180 with a Lycoming O-360A4A and Sensitech propeller. Unfortunately, I'm not sure on of the prop model as I haven't pulled the cone yet. Since I purchased my Cherokee, there has been a slight vibration in it while running and flying. The first...

Question about adding a second electric AI by M
I'm considering adding a second (backup) electric AI. The primary AI is vacuum driven so is the DG. Two questions: 1. Does adding a backup electric AI require an 337? 2. Does the electric AI needs to be TSO'ed? The plane will be used strictly for part 91 operations. Thanks! -M

I Want My Own Bird by Yeah_right
I really want to make a good decision on this so, I'm giving myself plenty of time, two years, to get my ducks lined up. I've want either an Archer or an Arrow with an IFR package. I've started looking at and pricing hanger space at selected airports in the Houston area where it'll be based. ...

Ceconite Wings Question by Captain Wubba
Hello. I'm considering purchasing a plane that has Ceconite wings. They were recovered last year professionally, and according to an A&P I asked to have a quick look, were done well and correctly, and have a UV protectant. My question is the following: I don't have access to a hanger. This plane...

TKM 170 as a replacement radio by Ian Taylor
All, I am looking to upgrade the avionics in my '78 Mooney 201. I am going to swap out the KY196 and KNS 80 for a Garmin 430 which will drive the KCS-55A HSI, which leaves me with a KX175B driving a KI-204 as a backup ILS/NAV/COM. It would be nice to have a "flip-flop" option over there, and...
