Cherokee fuel sending units by
Mike Spera
I have finally had enough of the bad sending unit on the right tank.
Since I want the beast in and out quickly, I figured I would get an
exchange unit from Airparts of Lock Haven. $500 core charge? Yikes! I
guess they REALLY want that core back!!! I believe the "stock" sending
units/gauges on a 74...

Garmin 396 Trip Report (long) by
Mike Spera
We made a 250NM trip from the Chicago area up to Eagle River, WI this
weekend and it was the first cross country with the new 396. The weather
reports were not stellar and normally we would have never tried a trip
under anything less than perfect conditions. But, the thought of having
quick...

Garmin GpsMap 396 - Flight Test #3 by
Mike Spera
After the 2 ridiculous TFRs were lifted, I was able to test the swap
unit. As some of you may have read, the original unit kept losing
satellite lock and the dealer swapped it with a new unit at my request.
The replacement is much better. However, it still goes out to lunch
after transmitting...

GPSMap 396 Power Cable by
Mike Spera
Well, we just broke the first power cable for the beast. I had read that
others were having problems with plug failures so I bought a spare a
while back. The plastic part that is physically plugged into the unit
separates from the back part of the connector molded to the cable. Total
operations...

Cherokee Strobe Power Supply Mounting Plate by
Mike Spera
Still looking for this mounting plate. Called every boneyard in the US
and NOBODY has one. I would even consider buying a new one if one
existed. The part number does not show up as valid in any of the
databases. Part number 99031. I will make one if I have to, but I really
hate having to spend any...

Airtex Interior Refurbishment - Day 51 by
Mike Spera
Day 51 (Diversions)
As part of the wall panel installation, there were several small
subprojects that needed to be done. Some things were necessary to "clean
up" previous sloppy or failing installations. Others were needed because
the new walls were not made exactly like the old ones. Still...

Interior Replacement Project - Day 8 by
Mike Spera
Day 8 (Big Box Time)
Earlier than estimated, the carpet set arrived. Also, the screws,
finishing washers, glue, seat webbing, and extra carpet/material arrived
with it. First thing I noticed was THE SMELL! I thought one of the glue
cans came open. Nope. The carpet has a very strong solvent smell....

Interior Replacement Project - Day 5 by
Mike Spera
Day 5 (Small Start)
As I said in the “Day 0” installment, I ordered all new front seat belts
and shoulder harness retractors from Chief along with the Airtex
interior. The belts arrived and I proceeded to put them in. Since they
are relatively easy to take out again, they did not have to be...

Lycoming 0-360 factory overhaul core charges - Does Air Powertell the truth ? by
Mike Spera
O.K. I read all the replies. I offer another viewpoint. As a contract
negotiator for the last 17 years dealing with all types of vendors, I
have a few observations.
First rule: GET IT IN WRITING BEFORE YOU START THE WORK!!!!!!!!
Second rule: If they won't put the deal in writing, or you don't...

Garmin 396 Reception Improves by
Mike Spera
I did have the GA-25 antenna all the while I had intermittent lost sat
reception. Bought a new high-gain replacement on line and did the swap
last weekend. For 2 days prior to the swap, I would lose reception
completely on a S-SE heading. The new antenna shows 10 sats 3/4 way up
or better....

Lycoming 0-320 Exhaust studs working loose by
Mike Spera
I have had intermittent problems with 0-320 exhaust studs working loose,
usually with overhauled cylinders. I understand it if I have a stubborn
nut to remove for a gasket change and the stud comes out with it. I
figure that if I reuse that stud/nut again I am asking for it to work
back loose...

Engine Baffling Supplier by
Mike Spera
As the 74 Cherokee ages, the engine baffling (0-320 E3D) is starting to
show its age. Various places have been stop drilled over the years and
it is time for replacement.
I really don't want used salvage parts because they are likely in the
same condition as what I have. The intercylinder...

Garmin 396 Reception Problems - Again by
Mike Spera
Its bbbbaaaaaaacccccckkkkkkk.
I thought we had the 396 reception problems solved with the unit swap
and upgraded firmware. On climb out the thing lost its lock again and
continued to do so until I changed course. That ain't gonna be an option
on a plan in IMC (uh, center, I need to change...

Cherokee 140 Oil Temp Sender by
Mike Spera[_2_]
Still trying to track down a high oil temp reading. I would like to get a
new temp sender to swap out. Too lazy to rig up the hot plate, thermometer,
etc. to test the old one. Part has a number of 362-EW. Same number is on a
friend's Arrow. Methinks most/all cherokees may use the same one....

Cherokee 140 High Oil Temp. Update by
Mike Spera[_2_]
As you may recall, I have been troubleshooting a higher than normal oil temp
in the Cherokee. Checked the baffling, replaced the oil cooler with a new
one, replaced the Vernatherm, checked the oil cooler lines, all with no
luck. Temps stay 1-3 needle marks above 180 degrees which is 1-3 needle...

back she ran rough for milliseconds on two occasions. The 1st time was so fast, Donna didn't even notice. The second time she was
expecting it.
Any ideas?

Yellow tags by
Mike Z.
I am still filtering out all the usual paperwork that comes with a previously loved airplane. You know, the usual receipts for 12
new batteries dating back to WWII etc.
Anyway, there are lots of yellow tags stapled in the logs and almost as many in various envelopes.
I was scanning the logs onto...

fzzzzt, popped alternator breaker C-172M by

Ok, here is one for you.
The other night, about the time I landed, I hear a pop and remember seeing a visible flash. I see the amp gauge has a big discharge.
After I taxied off, I try resetting the alt half of the master. The high volt light is dimly lit and glows brighter when I turn off
half...

Need A/P to do pre buy near RDU by
Mike Z.
I would appreciate if someone could steer me to a good picky A+P.
I need a pre-buy done on a 172 near RDU Raleigh Durham.
It would be even better if it was an IA and things go OK we can turn it into an annual.

I have DCs for the front seats and 1- lightspeed QFR Solo for the back. Lightweight, quiet and non vice-like. I am considering a
second pair for the other side at about $125.
