Why nitrogen? by Viperdoc[_5_]
The thread on brakes raised a question from the past- why nitrogen in the tires of big jets and heavies? Air is around 78% nitrogen anyway, and the coefficient of expansion of the remaining 20% that's oxygen can't make that much difference in volume. Why not just use dry air? I couldn't imagine...

Get-there-itis or getthereitis or gettheritis, anyway... by Ricky
One time in my small flying career did I make a flight that I knew was unsafe before & during the flight and in hindsight was idiotic (maybe not to some) and could have been tragic if my Arrow's engine had failed. I was in Commercial/instrument training when I flew from San Antonio, TX. to...

Jet Engine Thrust Question by Darkwing
How does rated thrust for a jet engine translate to actual power? I guess my question is, for example, a Cessna Mustang has two engines that produce 1,460 lbs of thrust each (x 2) so the total is 2920 lbs of thrust for the two engines. The takeoff weight for the Mustang is listed as 8,645 lbs....

4 weeks until Wings Over Houston! by Ricky
In 4 weeks I will attend an airshow I've never been to; "Wings Over Houston." Show is going on in spite of Ike, which was a concern. The main reason is to experience the most hardcore, insane aerobatics I've ever seen, Sean D. Tucker. Follow links to a 13 minute, full performance video here if...

BRS by Gezellig
Recent Cessna Skycatcher chute failed to deploy. http://www.avweb.com/eletter/archives/avflash/1215-full.html#198852 What are the real values, and in what "normal situations" is BRS worthwhile? Are there significant insurance cost reducs that make this system cost effective?

Anyone go to CAF Airsho last weekend? by Ricky
I make an annual tradition of the CAF Airsho but this year it was on a weekend that was impossible for me to attend. This Airsho has changed little in the 25+ years I've been going but it has never gotten old. As a kid I loved the fire & explosions, as an adult pilot/mechanic It's more a love of...

A Strange Flying Event by javawizard
Nicholas Alkemade's airplane was totaled in an air raid over Nazi Germany and he had to bail out from more than 3 miles up, without a parachute. As he fell, his speed accelerated to 120 miles per hour. He landed in a snow-covered pine forest and was completely uninjured. - from the Having a Bad Day...
