Lycoming Prop-Strike AD question by
Tien Dao
There is a CRANKSHAFT GEAR RETAINING BOLT AD 2004-10-14 effective June 25
2004, pertaining to certain types of Lycoming engines, which redefines
"prop-strike" and states:
"(e) Compliance with this AD is required as indicated before further flight
if the engine experiences a propeller strike after...

AOPA Flight Planner - Microsoft only? by
Andrew Gideon
I tried to go to the AOPA Flight Planning web page today, and found that the
only option remaining is to download a Microsoft-only application. This
seems annoying.
Sure, I was able to go directly to the duat web site, and it was fine. But
I'm a member of AOPA, and they've eliminated a benefit...

DUI's and flying? by
Part86
I have no flight experience, but I'd like to persue some kind of career as a
pilot. My problem is that I have two DUI's and I don't know how that effects my
opportunities. Does anyone have any knowledge on this subject? I'm 23 years old
and I don't neccessarily have to be a commercial pilot, but...

"Rolling" to ATC by
Mxsmanic
Under what conditions, if any, would you explicitly tell ATC that you
are rolling, that is, actually rolling on the runway for take-off?
I hear this used occasionally, but I don't know if there are any
formal circumstances that merit it, or if it is just at pilot
discretion, or what. It is...

Discovery Flight today...unexpected results by
DGS
Hi all. I'm a 39 year old guy who has loved flying and dreamt of
being a pilot for a long time. This year I finally realized that I
had more than enough money to start and figured I owed it to myself to
book a discovery flight with every intention of seeing it through to
my private pilot's...

Setting altimeters with no radio by
Mxsmanic
Since it is possible to fly without voice radio equipment, and given
that (if I understand correctly) pilots are supposed to have their
altimeters set correctly to a reference located not more than 100
miles from their position, how does an aircraft without a radio keep
its altimeter properly set...

A Call to Arms from Richard VanGrunsven by
Jim Logajan
The FAA is about to make it a whole hell of a lot harder for people to
build safe amateur built aircraft. Richard VanGrunsven, founder of one of
the most successful kit aircraft companies, has written up a warning and a
call to arms about the issue. You can read it beginning on page 3 of this...

The Death Of Bear Bottoms by
Jeffrey Bloss
We can only hope.
I have found out the Truth. William "Billy Bob Bear" Bottoms, ex
aviator/drug smuggler was ordered to Cease And Desist from posting to
Usenet. It seems that Jacqueline Bottoms name was associated with Bear
Bottoms notorious Usenet posting history and this denigrated her status
as...

The price of gas by
C J Campbell
So oil is now over $40/barrel and this is being blamed for the fact that gas
is now over $2/gallon and avgas is well over $3/gallon.
As one news report put it, oil is the most expensive it has been since the
1970's. Ummm, anyone remember what the price of gas was in the 1970's when
oil was pushing...

MoGas users: Ethanol replacing MTBE by
John
To those who fly with STCs for motor fuel instead of avgas, is the
phase-out of MTBE affecting you? The federal government hasn't banned
MTBE outright (some individual states have) but will not protect oil
companies from MTBE lawsuits so MTBE is being phased out by next week in
most places. MTBE...

40 years ago today I was ferrying a F-89J from the Maine Air Guard at

20K, keeping under the big jet stream blowing east, I was about 150
out of Oklahoma City, my next refueling stop, when ATC came up on

"Enhanced Security" at various airports.... by
Dr. Anthony J. Lomenzo
Recently I've had to make various trips down south due to
my father's health. As he's 88 even a simple cold can and often does
turn into pneumonia, the bane of senior aged folks. And rather quickly.
Anyway, in my area, so-termed "enhanced security" is in effect. I
mention this because various of...

Other than the 'holier than thou' aspects of taildraggers and their
pilots, what are their real advantages? Has it to do with prop

same environment? Does anyone know if, with the same level of
experience pilots, they have a better...
