Step-up Planning by
O. Sami Saydjari
I now own a PA28R201T, Piper Turbo Arrow III. It is a great plane
(although, as some of you know, I have had more than my share of
"challenges"). At altitude it cruises at 170 knots. Cost to operate is
around $90/hour (figuring maintenance and such). My range requirement
is 660nm with 45...

Express Aircraft of Olympia WA quits by
dancingstar
x-posted to rah,rao,rap
Here's a news scoop for you all...
Express Aircraft Company, formerly Wheeler Express, has gone out of
business. Apparently TCM (Teledyne Continental Motors) was unable to
honor shipment of their "Full Authority Digital Engine Control" (FADEC)
IOF-550 engines which...

Flying under Class B by
PaulaJay1
What is the minimum legal distance (altitude) to fly VFR under a Class B
"wedding cake"? CLE has a 1900 ft floor at the north side by Lake Erie and I
have flown at 1800 to go around CLE. I was not talking to CLE so I don't know
if they objected. Today I was coming around CLE decending IFR. When...

Ignition leads by
C Kingsbury
So a few weeks back I posted here about large mag drops and electrical noise
on the radio. Many posters prognosticated that an ignition lead was to
blame, and when the mechanic opened the cowling, this was confirmed- one
lead gone beyond repair.
He put all leads on a tester, and said the other 7...

High Oil Pressure (was: Low oil pressure, high oil temp?) by
Thomas Ploch
What about high oil pressure. My factory zero time O-235C1 is running
at around 90 psi in cruise. This is at the very top of the allowed
range.
Oil Pressure Limits - (Normal operations) Minimum 60 p.s.i. Maximum 90
p.s.i.
(Idling 25 p.s.i.)
(Starting & Warm-up) Maximum 100 p.s.i.
Is this a...

Fly to Cacun on a Sunday? by
Victor J. Osborne, Jr.
If customs is listed as Monday to Friday (i.e. part-time) in Cancun, is it
possible to arrive/depart on a Sunday?
Also, anyone have any recent Cancun experience (flight to/from)?

The dumbest thing we've done, yet... by
Jay Honeck
So last night (our "Friday" night) Mary and I spent four hours at the
hangar, remounting our "new" wheel pants.
At the same time we decided to change the oil and filter, which had around
35 hours on them. Knowing that we would be doing this, yesterday I had
attached the hose to the quick-drain on...

Palm PDA software for aviation by
H.P.
Anyone have any recommendations for aviation software for the Palm PDA. I'm
thinking of AirCalc Pro through AvShop but there's a bunch of stuff
available from Palm Gear that's also shareware.

Piper Arrow IV fuel pressure by
MC
Does your fuel-pressure gauge fluctuate noticibly ?
Mine vibrates at about a 3Hz rate between the
middle and bottom of the green-band.
Engine runs fine...
Turning-on the electic pump reduces the amplitude of
the swing and stablizes it at around mid gauge.
Is this 'normal' ??

Diesel aircraft engines and are the light jets pushing out the twins? by
Dude
I don't see the fuel burn on the small turbines competing with the diesels,
but there are some attempts at getting close to the Lycosaur level.
Here is one - http://www.innodyn.com/
Don't know anything about them though.
As for light jets pushing down demand for twin piston and turbo props,...

Watch out for the Brokers by
Dude
Not the plane brokers, the stock brokers.
Their recent strategy, show up to airplane shows and get their hands on all
the cards they can.
I don't know how they got mine, but they left a message saying they had the
research I asked for(?), and that I should call right back.
Now that its happened...

where do you buy it (was which oil to you use?) by
The Weiss Family
It seems a majority of us use AeroShell 15W-50.
Has anyone found a really cheap place to get it.
There is a Shell distributor near my home that I was going to call on
Monday. Any other ideas?

NoseDragger Dragger by
AXA
Hello,
Has anyone ever purchased or use this tow from www.dragger.com?
Spruce sells it as well.
I need to push an aircraft up a small slope. I'm concerned that this
product would try a pull/push UNDER the nose wheel if too much
resistance is against the plane. It doesn't take too much to lift...

Questions for Airpark Dwellers by
Brett Justus
1. Has anyone had difficulty getting a VA loan because the house is
on an airpark or because it has a hangar associated with it?
2. How hard is it to get homeowners insurance and how much extra
cost?
Thanks,
- Brett

PA28: Difference in constant speed prop vs fixed pitch by
Nathan Young
I have a PA28-180 with a fixed 60inch pitch prop. I have always
wondered how much faster it would be if it had a constant speed prop.
I'm hoping someone with a PA28-235 (which has a constant speed prop)
could look up their speed for a reduced power setting, for example 57%
which would correspond...

Vibration Testing by
Jim Weir
I've come across a marvelously cheap vibration sensor that I want to convert
into an engine vibration instrument for a Kitplanes article. The electronics
for me is relatively trivial...the mechanics of vibration are a little harder to
fathom.
From a mechanical engineering point of view on a...
