Condiional inspections on composite aircraft by
Sonex655
I'm considering buying a 1988 Silhouette and am wondering how difficult
it is to find an AP mechanic willing to do a conditional inspection on
a composite aircraft. From the pictures I noticed a crack about 2
inches long right at the leading edge of the wing root fairing on the
fuselage. Other...

electric motor? by
solarsell
Is there a reason an elecric motor with a backup gas or diesel generator
wouldn't work in aviation? Here's a concept car idea:

arcrobatic kit planes by

What are good acrobatic kit planes that a first time builder could
handle? EAA isn't organized into categories, I'm slowly working
through their listed plans.

real cruise speeds by
[email protected]
In reality, what do you guys see as typical cruise speeds for the 172R
(1997 standard equip)?
What about the R182 Skylane RG (1978 vintage, constant speed prop)?
I ask cause it never seems to me to be what is in the AIM or POH (I
got seriously *limited* experience on this)

VWs by
[email protected]
I had posted a link to a vid of a 701 weaving through the trees over
on .piloting.
At some point down the line I expressed interest in a VW powered 701.
One guy said he figured a VW would melt down in an aircraft cowling
when producing no more that 50HP.
He provided a link to Bob Hoover's blog,...

Rotax questions by
[email protected]
I have some questions for Rotax users of 503, and 582 (583?) engines
who do their own maintenance.
1) How many special tools do you need to tear down these engines?
2) What are common problems encountered with the 2 stroke series?
3) Do they require consistent tinkering or are they pretty much...

Tube wing spars by
[email protected]
Actually I'm interested also to know if any other designs besides BD
aircraft utilize wing spars that are made of aluminum tube.
So if you know of any I'd like to know what they are.

fate of Amsoil Rutan Racer? by
[email protected]
One source said it was destroyed in a crash, the other said it was
hanging from the ceiling in the Reno Hilton. Anyone know what ever
really happened to this (quickie-like) racer?

Quickie / Rutan plans with polyurethane foam by
[email protected]
A lot of Rutan planes and derivatives call for polyurethane (in the
fuselage). My understanding is that starting around 1990, builders
have used urethane instead of polyurethane (in Long EZs, etc.). Has
this scenario taken place with Quickie Q1 s... ? Since most Q1s were
built before 1995, would...

Peel Ply: Purple Glow? by
[email protected]
I just started using a fresh batch of resin/hardener from Aeropoxy
(shipped by AS&S last week). I had a single white light off to the
side. I decided to uncover the part 30 hours after the lay up.
When I pulled the peel ply off quickly, the line where it separated
glowed bright purple for about...

A Simple Auto Engine Conversion by
[email protected]
I was thumbing through a catalog from Speedway Motors. They advertise
a magneto-type distributor. Assuming you didn't come across a
thrashed race engine with magnetos, couldn't someone put together an
engine worthy of aircraft use, by simply 1) ordering an aftermarket
engine with fuel injection,...

the isolation of prop loads on a crankshaft that IS
NOT DESIGNED to take prop loads.
This is the kind of problem I was fishing for in the original post --
something I hadn't heard of, but constitutes a show-stopper.
I like that two-into-one spark plug idea. If that's feasible, I'm a
LOT...

fiberfrax..which way is up? by
[email protected]
I'm getting ready to lay down fiberfrax in the cowling. One side is
smooth...the other has a "pebble" type texture. Which side should
face the engine...ie. which side would deal with fire the best?
