Shutting down alternators before engine shutdown by Ali Ghorashi
Hello All, The manufacturer of the alternators in the Cessna 310 that I fly requires the pilot to turn off the alternators before engine shutdown. Failure to do this will void the warranty on the alternators. Does anyone know of a reason for this? I have a suspicion that it has to do with the fact...

Inspiration by friends - mutal interest and motivation to get the PPL by Gary G
My buddy got his ticket last night. I had something to do with it. Well, he has something to do with my buckling down, too. We've been friends for quite some time, but didn't really know that each other had such an interest in flying. He'd gotten about 35 hours or so in, then kind of let it...

setting up a Garmin 296 by Cub Driver
Okay, I gave myself the early birthday present. I can't believe how sensitive the 296 is. I stroll down to the dock and it tells me that I am tracking 178 degrees at 1 knot; I turn around and walk back, and THE MAP FLIPS! and I am tracking 348 degrees (whatever). I even got it to show a bank on the...

How to get Aviation Position - Engineer/Business by Gary G
Hi folks, Looking for some advise This might seem strange. I'm one of those guys who didn't have much "vision" earlier on in life in terms of what I wanted to do. I got plenty-o-schooling, but feel now, nearing age 37, that I didn't make the "best choices" in terms of a career that makes me...

Looking for (recent, I believe) article about Va by Andrew Gideon
Help! I recently read an article which discussed Va. It spoke of how the idea of Va as we pilots understand it - that we cannot break anything with control movements if below Va - is incomplete, in that it doesn't take into account multiple controls, multiple control movements, and the like. But...

Surf the web while flying? by Capt.Doug
I usually don't read the posts about electronics, so please excuse my ignorance if this subject has been visited previously. I'm wondering if there is a device similar to a handheld GPS receiver (same size, portable antenna that suction cups to a window, battery powered) that I can use to surf the...

Using other freqs to communicate between planes or ground? by Gary G
I've wondered if it is legal to utilize an "unused" frequency to communicate between planes or to someone on the ground for non-critical communication? I don't know what for, but let's say you want to talk to your friend or CFI on the ground who might give "additional instructions" on things. Or,...

ZLIN 242 by Klaus Hofmann
Hello, after one year experience with a 226, I think about replacing it with a Zlin 242. I have flown 226, 526 and 142 and I know very well, that the *26 ist the nicer airplane for aerobatics. But there are little con's which ad up. - If you (I) fly only a few times per month taildragger, doing...

TSA Rule... what constitutes "training"? by Geoffrey Barnes
As I understand the TSA rule on alien flight training -- and please correct me if I am wrong about this -- anyone who is already engaged in flight training does not need to undergo the background checks. Now if that's true (and it might not be), what does a student need to have done to have...

Very long XC Story by SFM
I decide to take the plane and really go on a long XC flight, well beyond the definitions in the FARs, with my wife for a little R&R. This would be my longest flight to date and even surpassed what I did for my commercial long XC a couple of months ago. The totals we One way distance =...

Rating to Transport People Voluntarily by Gary G
Can a Private Pilot transport people for an organization or for "volunteer" purposes. Examples: Red Cross, transporting people for medical services (cancer patients) etc.? I've wondered about being able to volunteer services for organizations. Would they be able to "split costs" at all? Or is it...

Questions to TSA Administration by Andrew Sarangan
AOPA has also set up a special e-mail address for member questions to Adm. Stone about the flight training rules. Air Bus 300 crash in NY now blamed on co-pilot's improper use of rudder by Corky Scott
It was just a news blurb this morning on the local TV news, but they claimed that investigators now blame the loss of the Air Bus 300's tail on the improper use of the rudder by the co-pilot. If true (that the co-pilot is actually being blamed), I find that difficult to believe. A little research...
