Picking a Star/DP by
Bill
I got my instrument rating at an accelerated school in California.
Overall, I think my instruction went well, and I was very happy with
the results. I passed my checkride in a Piper Lance, and had no
troubles.
There was one part though that never quite made sense to me. My
instructor told me to...

Declare an Emergency early and often! by
tscottme
OK just kidding. I finished reading the great post about a failed vaccum in
IMC and the happy outcome. I wanted to post this message to share something
I learned some time ago when I participated in a university research
program.
The researcher was investigating pilot's decision to declare...

Clear to intercept localizer by
[email protected]
I want out to play last week. I requested clearance from EMT to RAL
for ILS to rwy 9. Shortly after I was level at 4000, I was cleared to
intercept localizer. As I tracked localizer, the glideslope started
down and I started down with it. At 3,700, ATC called to ask me to
remain 4000. I...

The FAA is crumbling by

*Ah, and the big one comes even closer. When you run off experienced
people and keep idiot managers this is what happens. As the FAA

New GPS satelllite, what is the fallout for GA ? by

"While the new series has just begun to fly, the Air Force has the next generation
already in the works. The GPS 2F satellites are under construction at a Boeing plant

Flight Level and a half by
Scott Draper
Is there a proper phraseology for reporting leaving 33,500? The AIM
doesn't say; it always assumes you're at a whole number flight level.

Should you tell Tower you're departing IFR by
John Clonts
or should they just know it already?
I was departing Sugarland (KSGR) yesterday, after having gotten my
clearance from ground control. Tower assigned me runway heading (this
was about 45 minutes later as there was MUCH traffic waiting in line
for takeoffs) and handed me off to departure. I had...

Approach plates on pocket PC? by
paul kgyy
I'm looking for the ability to just load and read approach plates on my
Ipaq. I know that Control Vision has their Pocket Plates, but with a
Garmin 430 I don't need geo-referencing, etc etc.
Anyone know of simpler setups available? I'd guess there should also
be a way to limit what you load by...

Government/Jepp Plate Comparison by
rps
I've been away from flying for a while. I stopped flying at around the
time the government plates were rumored to be changing to a new format.
I used to use Jepps.
I picked up flying again recently. The pilot's store I went to was out
of the Jepp express packs, so I decided to give the...

Taxi Clearance by

I just noticed this today:
AIM 5-2-2. Taxi Clearance
Pilots on IFR flight plans should communicate with the control tower on the
appropriate ground control or clearance delivery frequency, prior to
starting engines, to receive engine start time, taxi and/or...

Adrenalin rush by
Wizard of Draws
September 17, 2004 1:00 1.3 hrs. (.2 actual)
It was an overcast morning that cleared somewhat to scattered clouds around
5 and 6 thousand. Steve M. and I had plans to get a little actual on the way
to Thompson-Mcduffie (KHQU), and possibly log an approach or two. After I
filed and pre-flighted, we...

Logbook Question From An Outsider by
Jim
Greetings,
Would somebody be kind enough to answer a question from this first-time
poster?
Over the years, I've accumulated several dozen hours in Frasca and AST
300 simulators...of course, legally classified as ground trainers. I
have been under the impression that time in these ground trainers...

Instrument Training at night? Good Idea or not? by

I am getting ready to start of Instrument training. I plan on training
during the day on the weekends and 1 or 2 nights during the week.
What are your thoughts on instrument training at night? Personally I
don't fly at night and have only for what was required for my PPSEL.
However my goal is to...

Logging Approach Question by
Gerald Sylvester
Tonight I was flying back to SQL GPS 30. There was a dense, 100' thick
ceiling covering half the airport at 800' AGL/MSL. I was
in VMC the whole time yet it probably would have been illegal
to fly in VFR as I would have been close to the clouds (see note
below about this). So even though...
