Backup for dropping the gear by Andrew Gideon
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I've been reading the POH for my club's 182RG, and I find myself surprised. The manual gear extension replies upon the same hydrolic pressure system as the powered mechanism. Isn't that insufficiently redundant? I'm not sure what I expected - perhaps...

Favorite panel gadget? by Mxsmanic
If money were not an issue, and you had the opportunity to install a single new gadget in your instrument panel (without removing anything else--assume you have the room for something new), which instrument would you install, and why?

Piper Colt child seat STC by R. Wubben
I have been toying around with the idea of buying a Colt or a Tri-Pacer (having just foolishly sold my Ercoupe) and ran across an ad for a Colt with a child seat STC. I did a google search, a deja/google group search (on rec.aviation) and looked at the Short wing Piper web site and found nothing...

A dumb doubt on stalls by [email protected]
Is it possible for an aircraft to stall and sink nose-up tail-down instead of pitching nose-down? Or does aircraft design inherently preclude that? :) Thanks in advance, Ramapriya

The First Thousand Hours by Jay Honeck
Life is full of little transitions and milestones. Back in 1995, when I got my ticket, I privately vowed that I would fly 1000 hours in the next ten years. At the time, this seemed wildly optimistic. I had a house, two little kids underfoot, a wife who had just gone to working part-time in order...

How do weather services get sky conditions above the surface? by Mxsmanic
It's easy enough to establish measurement stations on the surface to measure wind, temperature, visibility, etc., but what is the normal way for meteorologists to measure these things aloft? Do they depend on PIREPs, or expendable/recoverable probes and balloons, or satellites, or what?

Rolling a 172 - or not by Scott Lowrey
If I'm crusing along at 100 KIAS in a 172 in clear air and I roll left while maintaining neutral rudder, what will happen if I don't neutralize the ailerons? I'm picturing the plane rolling on to its back while losing altitude and either completing the roll (doubtful) or stalling into a dive...
