Is a Turn Coordinator an electric motor or powered by fan? by
kickinwing
I have always read and been taught that a turn coordinator is usually
powered by electricity. Is the turn coordinator, in itself, an
electric motor? Or does an electric-powered fan supply the air to spin
the gyro?
Anybody have any insight for me? Thanks.

Another ADIZ violation? by
Wiz
All:
I heard a lot of air activity over my Washington, DC home today, and
was told later by a friend that an 84-year-old pilot had a total
electrical failure on the way from Stafford, VA (KRMN), where
maintenance was being performed on his plane. According to my friend,
the pilot landed at Indian...

Folding wings by
mindenpilot
OK, you have to humor me on this.
I'm not talking about anything unrealistic (like Moller's skycar, etc).
But what would prevent a design (even low performance/ultra light to start)
that would allow a pilot to fly into an airport, then fold up his wings and
cruise down surface streets at 45mph?
It...

A Random Comment by
birdog[_2_]
Just got around to reviewing all the comments under "Simulators". I guess it
was inevitable that it ended up as disagreements with MX. While I don't want
to get involved with that dead end, I have had an experience that kind of
parallels.
As I mentioned before, after I lost my medical, I tried...

Tinker Flying Club by
Jester
Hello all,
I have heard rumors in the past that Tinker Air Force Base (OKC)
had a flying club. I have looked in the base newspaper, and the tinker
homepage with no luck. I have also DAGS. Anyone know if one is still in
exsistence, or even fly with them. I heard they may be based out...

Headset recommendation by
Russ and/or Martha Oppenheim
I've decided to upgrade my old Telex headset, and have narrowed my choices
to the Bose X or the David Clark X11. Any comments, positive or negative,
about either of these two headsets? Thanks.

Bose X - $995 and holding... by
[email protected]
I've flown with the Bose X in my pal's Navajo (he has two up front and
two Sennheisers in back) and love it. The thing weighs nothing and the
sound quality is fantastic (esp with the CD player piped in). My bitch
is they're twice as much as the next cheapest ANR headset and by now
I'd figured the...

Lightspeed Excellent Service by
S Ramirez
I don't want this to sound like an advertisement for Lightspeed Aviation,
but I have to hail any company that has outstanding service.
My wife has a pair of 25XL headsets whose "stirrup" broke recently. We also
have some 20XL headsets that are used for passengers. They had a screw
missing along...

Personal Weather Minimums by

I just wanted to open a discussion regarding other's personal weather
minimums for VFR flights. I recently received my PPL ASEL certificate in
July and most of the days that I have flown have been very nice days.
Yesterday though I got caught a bit off guard and it prompted me to set a

Identify this taildragger by
Danl J
I have a friend who bought an airplane in 1962, and he cannot remember the make.
It was a white or cream taildragger with tandem seating and a control stick rather than a yoke. It was a high-wing airplane, and it was easy to fly.
He bought it when he was 15, for $600, and his only training was...

Seeking opinion on Penn Yan SuperHawk O-360 by
Zippity
Hi,
Our C172 O-320 is well over TBO and needs new cylinders. We are
thinking we might just bite the bullet and get a new engine at this
stage.
The Penn Yan Aero SuperHawk STC looks like a good option since it
would give us 180 HP - a nice extra safety margin for our short strip.
Has anyone here...

Charging for Wings safety seminar? by
Marty Shapiro
I local flying club advertised a Wings safety seminar for which they
would charge $30. This was done in an message to a distribution list for
local area pilots. Interestingly, if one went to the FAASafety.gov web
pages and noticed this seminar, there was no mention of a charge, and one
could sign...

Seeking anecdotes about "instructor in command" by
Andrew Gideon
Hi, all:
I'm giving a presentation on what someone here called "instructor in
command" syndrome: a pilot getting complacent because there's an instructor
in the aircraft.
I've found a number of good ones here, but any more - esp. with something
"interesting" - would be welcome.
I'd also...
