Themi cable set by John Ferguson[_3_]
Wonder if anyone has a spare Themi cable set (big plug, GPA aerial, etc.) or a complete unit. The cables for mine were lost when it was being calibrated. Let me know what you have and price, thanks. John

lightning strike protection by john firth
A comment on the report of the ASK 21 disintegration . ( see Starer Nov 8th) lightning strike protection: a fallacy At the end of a report describing a strike on an ASK 21, causing disintegration, we find " the BGA speculated on the improved lightning protection which non-conducting composite...

correction to strike protection by john firth
Apologies to the BGA for attributing to them, the suggestion of inserting non conducting sections in a control rod. Apparently this came from Schleicher, who have probably rethought the idea as being unhelpful. Yes , non conducting complete control rods will help, unless you have a carbon...

Reported "near miss" near Chicago. by john firth
The Chicago incident has been reiterated in Gliding International (jan 18). I am happy to report that the " near miss" has been replaced by "near collision" , a happier outcome! This is in accordance with my plea for accuracy. John F

SIGMA, the glider to incorporate all possible technical advances. by john firth
The link below produces Nick Goodhart's essay on the marvels of Sigma, a Britsh effort to make a world beater; this was before it flew! It failed probably due to excessive mechanical complexity and the high pilot work load. also the complicated extending flap proved difficult to implement and...

battery charge rate by john firth
Years ago , I replaced my PIK 20E SLA starter bat with an 8AH Odyssey; as it did not come with specific charging data, I used a 1A charger when needed . Thanks to our EAA president, it appears that Odyssey bats should be charged at a much high rate than SLA. 40% of the AH capacity, in amps 3 A...

corosion during storage by john firth
There is a report on serious corrosion in PIK 20 s due to condensation during storage. The rod ends in particular are susceptible. One recommendation is that the trailer be sealed with silica gel inside http://trafi.mailpv.net/a/s/95652244-7673938ea61c6658441d4f5c490a2ef4/1825275 I am...

small ribbon chute. by john firth
This was obtained for spin testing of an RHJ 8. It might be usable for a Kestrel or other ship using a drag chute. Made by Niagara parachute. You can have it for the cost of shipping. John Firth

transfer/ doublesdied tape. by john firth
Mylar seals continue to come loose from my PIK. Some have been there for some years and leave a yellowish residue of dried adhesive which can be easily scraped off as a powder;other sections have the carrying film left behind and a sticky adhesive layer on the wing; this needs solvent for...

spins and vintage gliders by John Firth
In the early 60 s , a kind member at MASA more or less gave me carte blanche to fly his unmodifed LK 10 when ever I wanted; as I was BGA trained and spin aware, I expored it's stall behavior; it dropped a wing so viciously that I did not let it autorotate. It had Clark Y section and no washout as...

slipping in turns by John Firth
A comment in addition to my previous about keeping the ailerons neutral for min. speed. Since adding winglets to my RHJ-8 (2S HP 14) the tufts showed how important it is to keep the winglet flow attached. A bit of slip easily stalls the inner winglet, negating it's benefit. John Firth

elevator /pitch control by John Firth
There was a story in S&G some years ago about a ASW 20 sucessfully landed without damage by use of flap changes; the pilot had read the manual. Following the fatal crash of a Cessna 150/150 hp two plane, due to a burned throughj elevator cable, two of us tow pilots experimented with pitch trim on...

Slingsby Kestrel trim speed C FFKQ ? by john firth
The pic gives a good idea of the boom mounted tailplane fixture. Next winter project for my PIK 20. I note that the elevator shows the BGA required mod., a downward cusp added to the Glasfluegel design. This was supposedly to provide feel at high speeds; found it (1972) to spoil the feedback and...
