Mooney M20F narrow across the shoulders by Mark Hansen
I looked at a 1969 Mooney M20F over the weekend, and was surprised to see how narrow it is in the cockpit. While sitting in the pilot's seat, I was pushed to the right by the left side of the cabin, and was not able to sit directly behind the control yoke. Perhaps I'm just too big for this...

Prop Balance and Murphy by Denny
WIth 4 hours on the fresh top overhaul I decided it was time to balance the prop as we removed the weights when sending the props out for new studs... I was delayed a bit at my monthly meeting down in Grand Blanc and got back to the airport at a quarter to one... The Kid was chomping at the bit......

Buying recently rebuilt or fixing one up? by [email protected]
I am currently taking flying lessons. I would like to own my own aircraft and have been considering various options. I am currently training in a 152 and I think a 150 or 152 would be a fun first plane to build time with. The 150/152's that appear to be in good condition seem to be in the 35k range...

Altitude Call Out is COOL by Jay Honeck
Okay, so I finally figured out how to turn the XM radio off without killing all audio output from the 496. (It's not as easy as it should be...) This has enabled us to finally hear the little "Southwest Airlines" chime, followed by bitchin' Betty purring "Altitude...500 feet..." through our...

2006 Annual -- My 8th Owner Assisted -- Update by Jay Honeck
Things are moving along. 1. My new tail-to-fuselage fairing has arrived, and my A&P has allowed as how we can use cherry pop rivets (rather than structural), which will save a bunch of headache. (Although Mary will still have to get back into the aft fuselage in order to vacuum up the rivets that...

oil leak fixed - breaking in new cylinders by Michael 182
A while ago I posted about an incurable oil leak in my '79 TR-182. Turned out to be rings. Decided to get a top overhaul. Now I am breaking in the new cylinders. On one hand I've been told, in capital letters, "DO NOT BABY THE ENGINE" On the other jand I've been told to maintain CHT of 325-350,...

Door Seal for Piper Archer by [email protected]
I have a 1995 Piper Archer which is starting to get loud inside as the door seal is getting all worn and cruddy. I looked on the web to buy new door seals. I did not realize there was such a plethora of products out there. I am thinking about the Avtek air-squeeze product and wonder if anyone...

Ethanol mogas by john smith
I was wondering if it is possible to remove the ethanol from mogas and thought of the folling idea. Alcohol binds with water. Get a big tank with a spigot at the bottom, fill it with mogas. Add water, aggitate, let sit. The alcohol ladden water will settle to the bottom. Open the spigot, drain the...

KAP140 Autopilot Weirdness by Brien K. Meehan
My autopilot has started fighting with me, and I'm afraid it's going to win. It's a 3-axis KAP140 in a Skyhawk SP. What it's doing is ... well, it just starts turning. After about an hour, it goes into a turn, unannounced. There doesn't seem to be anything instigating it. It's usually to the...

Plug in voltmeter by Bob
I'm looking for some advice on a voltmeter (preferably digital) that will plug into the "cigarette lighter" of my airplane. I found one on the J. C. Whitney site, but $50 is too much for what I want to use it for. I've got a JPI analyzer which reads voltages off the avionics bus, and also a...

Hello, I'm on the board of our local flying club and we manage the GA ramp. I am wondering if people can share with me what their airport (or other airports they've been to) are charge for overnight fees for jets. We have a small overnight fee for planes (which i believe is waived if they fuel...
