Lancair Legacy Design Flaw? by
Gregory Hall
http://www.youngeagles.org/photos/gallery/Monoplanes/LancairLegacy2000.jpg
Look at the picture. It's easy to see why the Lancair is dangerous. The
horizontal stabilizers appear to be on the too small side. This would result
in their stalling before the wing. Then the aircraft would pitch up...

Fast glass biplanes by
Jay
Apart from the Quickie group of planes why aren't there more fast
biplanes? The quickies aren't exactly biplanes I know. It would
appear that 2 short wings can be built lighter than one long one since
the moment arm is half as long for the shorter wing pair. No struts
used because of drag, just...

Is it a habit we prefer mechnical instruments? by
[email protected]
We used to mechanical instruments when we learnt fly in school. Whether
it is habit we can not accept digital meters. For example quartz
crystal watch, we almost accept it now. There few people using
mechanical watch. I think it is developing direction for digital
meters.
I just wondered which...

Sorry, Spruce and Jim Irwin by
Larry Smith
Jim, you and your company were quite courteous on a prop bolt exchange, so I
was gonna order some more mdse. And still hope to, even after this. This
morning I tried to order a Concorde battery for a friend's 172, and the
snappy lady in Griffin rejected the card, for curious reasons.
After a...

Looking for a fuselage by
Jay Honeck
Or a big propeller.
Now that our conversion to an aviation theme-suites hotel is almost
complete, we think it's time to make the *outside* of the place look more
aviation-ish. (We've only changed the inside, thus far.)
Anyone know where I can find an old Cessna 140 (for example) fuselage...

wood species question by

I'm looking to start a home built aircraft. Does anyone have any suggestions on which type of lumber to use that's a good alternative for sitka spruce?
Thanks

VP-2 Plans by
kansaswildman
I found a set of plans on the net. I was wondering if anybody had a vp-2
that wasn't finished yet and would be willing to part with it fairly
reasonable. I am currently implementing the plans into AutoCad/Solidworks.
If you are interested in them for reference only...let me know.
The plans for...

More Sportplanes Hype by
Gordon Arnaut
Well I just came across another piece of advertising masquerading as an
article in Private Pilot magazine.
The author goes up on a short hop in a Sting Sport, another plastic topy
ariplane from the Czech Republic and he's raving about it like it's the
biggest thing since sliced bread. He even...

What/how does compression ratio affect an engine? by
[email protected]
Hi,
So I was fantasizing the other day (as I do quite a bit) about my
latest dream-plane-to-build: an RV-9A. (Note that this is fantasy in
the extreme as I'm not a pilot yet AND I have no money!)
I was thinking of how to power this plane. A Jet-A burning diesel
would be great but that's another...

Zzzzzoom in Zzzzzero Gravity by
Montblack
This round apparently goes to Zoom.
Whether through guile, bluster, bluff ...or genuine journalistic
stick-to-itiveness, Zoom was the we were not. He deserves an "atta boy."
A question:
What are his ANN numbers?
Also:
What do those numbers mean?

homemade EFIS system and EMI by
jcpearce
As a pet/learning project I made a data aquisition unit using an 8051
microprocessor and an EPIA M motherboard running a variant of Linux to
process and display the information. It all works but the EMI from the
EPIA M causes way too much noise to the aircraft radios. I have tried
shielding the...

PSRU design advantages by
ADK
This is probably going to open old wounds. What I would like is experienced
input on the advantages, for economic, efficiency and longevity etc. of
different types of redrives.
I am leaning towards a cog-belt reducer in a 6 cylinder, liquid cooled,
configuration driving a long drive shaft to the...

Torsional Vibration and PSRU Design by
Gordon Arnaut
I hope ADK, who posted a question a few days ago on an interesting design
problem involving reduction gearing and a driveshaft got some insight from
the various postings.
The subject of torsional vibration quickly cam up and there was a lot of
stuff mentioned, but not really a simple and...

Cessna buyers in So. Cal. beware ! by
Bill Berle
This is a very lengthy but worth reading post. For the purposes of
possibly saving someone's life or at least preventing serious injury
to their wallets, I am posting below the text of an e-mail I sent
recently to someone who had advertised a Cessna in the San Diego area.
I was looking for a super...

I've had it with Chinese tools! by

I've had it with the El Cheapo Corp. tools I've been buying from vendors at
OSH and other places. When I really need them to deliver, they break or fail
to work as they should.
I need a set of QUALITY safety wire pliers (like the great ones we used to
use in the Marines in the late 70's and...

Vibration Monitor (Hyde, Wanttaja?) by
RST Engineering
Necessity, as they say, is a mother.
I am in the process of reinventing a square wheel called a vibration
monitor. The electronics is relatively trivial IF the input and output
parameters are known.
What we know is that the engine is going to have a fundamental frequency at
cruise RPM. Let's...

I Wanna Build an Aeroplane by
Badwater Bill
Yep. My wife and I decided that we want to build us an aeroplane.
What we want is something that has 6 seats for the kids. It has to go
250 miles in an hour and only burn 6 gallons an hour. It has to be
cool looking, have wheels that fold up, go through clouds and bad
weather and be capbable of...
